Otres Sucks Too...

Post by Cruisemonkey »

After two weeks 'downtown' on Victory Hill  I'm a week-and-a-half into a four-week stay at Otres. What a shit hole! Almost everyone is either: stoned, drunk, stupid or incompetent (or some combination of the four).

The 'Village' & main street is a construction zone with an endless parade of giant trucks and cement mixers kicking up constant clouds of choking dust. The beaches are nice (but I didn't come for the beach) and seem to be the only reason someone would be stupid (or stoned) enough to live here. The fuckin' ubiquitous 'man buns' and 20-somethings who think it's the summer of '67 (in combination with every 'new age' wacko trend) and the neo-Nazi biker wannabes are driving me insane.

The 'resort' (Sok Sabay) is nice with well-designed/appointed rooms and a small but decent pool. However, it's staffed buy a troop of retarded baboons who do nothing but spend all day staring at cartoons on their phones.
Q: How many Khmers does it take to change a light bulb?
A: 12... and it takes four-and--a-half fuckin' hours!
The 'Lake' must be a fetid sewage collection pond in dry season. Now, it seems like a large extension of the mud roads.

The resort wants $7/day for a moto!... and I would have had to leave my passport (event though I'm a guest)... which is difficult to do when it's being sent to PP for a visa extension. With a photocopy of my passport I got a moto for less than $4/day from one of the few competent Khmers in the village. Naturally, 'resort' food & drink prices are inflated; but, the 'Full English Breakfast' (eggs, bacon, sausage, beans, mushrooms and half a baguette is not only overpriced, it's disgusting - the 'sausage' is fuckin' fish (fake crab - surimi)! Their pizza is surprisingly good, large and well-priced. Oh well... live & learn. 8-)

Thank heaven for 'Adam's Family' Restaurant - an amazing breakfast (with real, smoked sausage) and fantastic schnitzel & mashed potatoes for dinner (a good burger too). Khmer Kitchen has an extensive menu of good food at good prices.

Gotta go - despite wi-fi being available throughout the resort (it is for phones... but not computers) I have to take the laptop to 'Reception' to be able to stay connected to the Internet.

I won't be retiring in Snooky... that's for sure!

More next week... maybe.

Yeah, I know "Snookie is NOT Otres.... and V hill is not down town"... but it doesn't matter - the Chinese are everywhere in Snooky.

I live/work in China now (for the past 5.5 years) and don't want to retire in 'Shanghanoukvillehai' (came to check out condo developments, but they're all Chinese).

A somewhat baffling post!

For example, Otres is known because of it's beaches, especially. So to go all the way there, but say you didn't come for the beaches seems a little 'odd' to say the least.

I was in a similar position to you during my last time in Snookie. I was staying on Victory Hill, but getting fidgetty, so i took my rented motorbike and drove down to check out Otres 1, 2, and village. It became obvious to me that accomodation prices, food, everything was higher and probably lower quality than on Victory Hill, so i decided that if i was gonna stay it would only be for a temporary 'splurge' than for a long time, and i think that is the way to approach it, if you do decide to stay there.

I will go as far as saying that i had the best possible 'beach experience' there whilst chilling in a quality beach-side resort bar, drinking happy hour beers with a mate. I would reccomend Otres to anyone looking for the best beaches, apart from going to the Islands. As long as they find the nicer places to hang out they can have their 'little corners of paradise', as i did, even if only for a few hours. No complaints in that respect

Why anyone would go there for the Village seems confusing to say the least. It appears in parts under construction so to speak, and seems basically built to attract a Hippy style traveller. Goto the 'Lagoon' area and it appears like some sort of clique trademarked hippy commune, seperated from the rest of the World. However, it will be interesting to see the place in a few years time, i thought.

In the end i never stayed in Otres, but i'm sure one can have a fun alternative time there if one goes in the right spirits and tries to 'blend in'...

As for Victory Hill? Well i have also stayed there like 10-12 years ago, so i have good memories of that area, and that is why i stay there when i visit Snookie. I also like the 'community vibe', and lower costs. I have looked around all the areas like Downtown, the Beaches, but that place suits me for those various reasons, although due to the recent massive influx of the Chinese, which seems to be rapidly changing the once happy vibes, i may have to look elsewhere during future trips.....

lol whoever thinks the best beaches in Sihanoukville are in Otres are very il informed lol
but im not going to give away the location of the better beaches, because i want them to stay that way,
if people are interested they can inbox me

i went to Otres 1+2 earlier this year and the beaches are a dump now, the beaches are on par if not worse than Ochheateal,
they look nice until you see all the rubbish people leave behind all the time, at least Ochheateal the bars make a small attempt to keep the beach clean

Jamie, could you pm me details of your favourite "secret" beaches please.

Otres does seem to be the go-to-spot nowadays on the mainland, I used to enjoy the walk along the beach to Otres when I first visited 4 years ago, but its so much busier now & lots of development going on

I'm talking about the best Beach Experience, meaning vibes. Actually the far end of Ochoteal is a bit of a 'pretty' spot, as is the private Beach in Sokha. Butttt....If you want to feel far from the scene then drinking cheap beers from a top star Hotel bar on the Otres 2 Beach is hard to beat for *lush beach vibes*, IMO.

There are spots where there is rubbish, but was none in front of the Hotels Bar, overlooking that Beach. Ahhhhh.....
