Other expat communities to keep up with?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Other expat communities to keep up with?

Post by AE86 »

Hi all,

I used to live in Cambodia from 2011 to 2014 (Jan) but live in the states right now (although I am here in PP at the moment). All I really knew of was K440 at the time where I posted fairly frequently. Other than that, I don't know. Anyway, I wanted to keep up with things in Cambodia and wondered if anyone had suggestions of online places that people are at. I know of facebook, but I don't know how it works, nor do I know which facebook to join and then there's a Yahoo group I've heard, but I don't know how that works, nor do I know anyone on it...

Anyway, just curious on where to "hangout" to keep touch with Cambodia and it's expats.

Thanks!

there's SihanoukvilleOnline.com and LivingInCambodia.com.

Both are pretty quiet though last time I checked in with them. ThaiVisa has a whole section for Cambodia as well.

there are a RETARDEDLY high number of facebook pages. it makes them suck. because 1 person ends up posting the same shit on all of them, or stuff ends up so scattered between them you end up missing it.

that list richard posted is a VERY small sampling of them. i count at least 15 that i keep getting added to... all expat run. and almost all fairly useless because they're full of spam.

I've never joined facebook before, but I've seen so many people talk about so many things so often that I just give up even trying to follow. Even on forums I read almost none of the other topics because I just can't read that fast.

EDIT: Thanks btw, I'll have a look at those and other suggestions as well, but maybe not facebook.

One of the big problems/attractions to the facebook model is the A.D.D. system. Posts are there, talked about a little, then gone. If they ARE talked about a lot it ends up being overwhelming and people stop the notifications... so then stop talking about them.

Meaningful conversations rarely happen, usually just blurb responses and then gone. Or sometimes just a "like" and gone. Meaningless.

There are exceptions to this... but they still end up lost causes. Usually because the threads get too long and repetition begins or because the conversation is moving so fast that it's impossible to reply to a post before it's well buried and without context becomes difficult to reference.

I had a post top out over 300 comments... the last 1/3 was almost a direct rehash of the 1st 1/3.

AE86,,,call me selfish if you like, but I would not tell you if there are any other forums, cause I'm afraid you might forget about us here and put all that knowledge and good info you have, on another forum.
I don't think you fully realise that your posts on motorbikes etc that you posted on that other forum in the past , were some of the best informative advise that we have ever had over the past few years.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

FB and Twitter are not a replacement for forums, they've a different use, they're for quick and simple exchange of opinions in real time.

I think you're right. I always have (and still do) see myself as just an ordinary person trying to make what contributions he can via the internet. Honestly though, I never started with the intention of writing for gain or money (still don't), just to give the information that I could for others to read in case it would help. I'll admit though, I was very surprised to have such an outpouring of welcomes when I posted again. I never thought such information would have "earned" me any kind of thanks, let alone would have caused me to be missed in anyway.

I'm glad there are those that found some of the information useful though, and that's all I wanted.
