Not exactly....Laces being the more traditional spelling.
That teaching career, where do I sign up? I wear slip-ons, so a career standing around with odd chalk marks on my arm is out.

Look even closer and you will note that there is an insert with a zipper held in by laces attaching it to each side of the boot.
Common practice.

Those goons are new this year. What’s that about? They have both women and men so I don’t think they hold a particular rank but they walk around like they own the place as if they’re carrying one fridge each swaying around taking a protected promenade to borbor stands. Very bizarre.

They have been at the Water Festival for at least the last couple of years. I believe they are from the Bodyguard Unit, and of course would have ranks but they aren't displayed except perhaps on their lanyards.
