Only In Cambodia

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Many of the cars imported are write offs from California ( and Texas) and rebuilt and shipped to Cambodia for sale

You are right Richard. Most cars in Cambodia were imported from mostly California and Texas.

A"write off" car is a car which has been damaged so badly that it would be cheaper to replace rather than repair. An insurance company will write this car off the books, and give the car owner a payout that lets them buy another vehicle.

The "written off" cars are then sold at auction, often bought for $500/1000, some get bought by Cambodian car traders, shipped here, repaired and sold for a small profit.

This is a big problem, as it's not known how badly the car was damaged. There are many, many unsafely repaired cars on Cambodias roads. This contributes to the high death toll in road accidents here - a car that has been badly damaged and superficially repaired will not protect you from injury if it's involved in a heavy collision.

So be careful what type of car you buy.

^Never used this site, but I've been told you can look up the history of any American car by the VIN#...

If I were thinking of buying an American car I would certainly use it.

Edit: spelling

Not sure how important this is in Cambodia. Big smashes little as a general rule. If you have a shoddy repaired car which smashes into the same size of car, then yes the shoddy one will come off worse. But if a truck or bus gets you, then you get blasted either way. But even in a shitty car, you will come off better than the motorbike that blindsides you.
