Only In Cambodia
Re: Only In Cambodia
Sorry everyone. I felt like i failed to express my idea toward his issue. i was referring to the government that always promised that it would stop this from happening and every year nothing changed, even though there were a lot of articles published on local news saying that every bus companies please do not increase the price of ticket during let's say, Khmer New Year and Phum Ben.

The problem is that the government can never control things like that, they can't force companies to not increase their prices.
It is admirable of them trying to do so, but a free market is just that, a free market, and as stated by several other posters before: Supply & Demand rule.

Thing is, the message that the government sends to the people is that they CAN control everything; it's not surprising that people are disappointed.Jaap N. wrote:The problem is that the government can never control things like that, they can't force companies to not increase their prices.

Samouth says that the government has "promised" to prevent price increases in transport over the holidays. That's his perception, and probably a lot of Cambodians see it the same way.

Not very wise of the govt to create false expectations like this I agree.
I don't have any answers, except maybe don't promise what you can't deliver, and don't deny prices will increase over the holidays when this is the case.

Re: Only In Cambodia
If you had a hotel business samouth, wouldn't you increase prices when you knew thousands of people would be coming to town and there would be a lack of accommodation, and lower them when it was low season? What if you owned a bus company? Wouldn't you increase prices at certain times because there's a big demand for the service you offer, plus the fact that you have to pay your workers extra for working during a holiday? It's not just the bus companies, but also the "laan touriss" drivers who will charge more. Everything is more expensive during big holidays, it's the same all over the world. As Duncan said, a mechanic, plumber or electrician would all charge more to come over to your house to do repairs during a holiday. Why should they take their day of rest to go work? Same goes for bus drivers, ticket sellers and other workers at bus companies. How could the government justify it? Please lose money (or make a lower profit than possible) by opening your business during a national holiday? If the government wants cheap transportation during holidays, maybe they should open their own public bus company.

Remember when the global oil price dropped, and Fluffy Bunny announced he'd asked the US to lower the cost of fuel to make life easier for the rest of the bunnies? I actually heard local bunnies sharing that as something that really happened...

the british government vowed it would increase the price of alcohol in the supermarkets to discourage people and to try and sort out the british binge drinking culture......

3 years later the supermarkets still continue to sell super cheap alcohol, one Tesco last year even got rid of all its fruit and vegetables and replaced them with alcohol for the weekend during Reading Festival....Supermarkets banned from 'irresponsible' alcohol offers under new plans
Supermarkets will be banned from "irresponsible offers" that make beer cheaper than water under plans to tackle binge-drinking, a Home Office minister has said.

A Tesco store has geared up for the start of Reading Festival by swapping its vegetables for vast supplies of alcohol.
The supermarket in Reading, Berkshire, has been transformed into a special ‘festival shop’, with thousands of revellers expected through their doors over the next few days.
Green crates filled with spirits including vodka and Jägermeister have replaced the usual stock of salad and potatoes in many aisles.
The Reading West store, located a 15-minute walk from the music event, has around four aisles stacked full of beer and cider

The gov't recently introduced rent controls and could conceivable cap fare price jumps for buses. Perhaps an increase of 50% could/ should be the maximum?Jaap N. wrote:The problem is that the government can never control things like that, they can't force companies to not increase their prices.

The companies have to pay their staff extra and run many empty busses since many people leave PP at the beginning of the holiday and then return at the end. Most routes are served by multiple companies so I assume the prices are competitive.
Scarier than malaria.

I cant find a link, but i read somewhere about the government was planing to operate bus service to several destinations in the country. i don't know if you remembered this. There a post posted by CEOCambodianews about the government of Cambodia will be receiving 100 buses from China and 50 or 100 from Japan as donation. The government will use those buses to provide transportation from city to provinces.Bitte_Kein_Lexus wrote:If you had a hotel business samouth, wouldn't you increase prices when you knew thousands of people would be coming to town and there would be a lack of accommodation, and lower them when it was low season?
