Not to cast aspersions on SC, but the belief system will manifest itself in teaching.

It's like the Hollywood Jewish director syndrome. Some anti-semites claim Jews control Hollywood. Whilst a bunch of guys probably never sat down and said 'Let's control Hollywood', it happened nonetheless, many would argue. When did you last see a movie where someone mentioned a Hindu festival? A (positive) Islamic one? A JW/Mormon one? A Sikh one? Yet Jewish festivals/faith references are mentioned constantly in movies. It's not part of an elaborate plot to take over the world; it's inevitable that directors and actors will reference their own faiths and beliefs.

So, unless there is an impartial watchdog, I'm pretty sure SC's teaching will involve prosletyzation (sp?) in some form, be it conscious or sub-conscious(I'd tend to believe the latter)

Obviously the link you posted is directly for the church itself - not exactly an independent look, eh?

So..the Harvard Crimson article wasn't disturbing? Hmmm...well, you need for your own edification google "Church of Christ cult" and wade through the data...lots, ironically enough, from more mainstream Christian churches, but many secular-based critical reportage as well. It is widely referred to as a "cult" - make up your own mind...

older reports on youtube:

The older reports mean nothing to me but I did spend some time last night researching "Churches of Christ". It seems that most RECENT mainstream Christian Groups are rather negative about this group but few regard it as a true cult (although perhaps originally rooted in cult-like traits). It seems they are now regarded as a fringe group operating on the periphery of mainstream Christianity. As an aside, during my reading I found it remarkable how intolerant different 'New age' Evangelical groups are of each other.

Yes, I prefer to look at the site of the group itself to see what THEY actually say about their practices, rather than reading 15 year old articles from sites committed to smearing groups that do not conform to their particular worldview. If you look more closely at your cultwatch source, it seems that they are every bit as extremist and intolerant as the 'cults' they attack -- only proving that there is no shortage of extremist, intolerant cults under the so called "Christian Tent".

This is not to say that I am supportive of "Church of Christ". Their own website is suggestive of raging fundamentalists looking to find the downtrodden and half drown them in a river to be saved. In short the exact type of Christian group I am most wary of.

I am only suggesting that maybe you could follow my example and listen to the 'original source' of your criticism (In this case Stroppy) rather than rushing to judgement and attacking him.

A more reasonable line of discussion might be:

-- What exactly is his relationship with "Church of Christ"? Do they fund him in any way? Does he have any specific accountability or "Mission Objectives" related to hem?

-- Does he share the views of Church of Christ as stated on their web site? (e.g., Salvation only by Baptism)? Is he out to (or even willing to ) half drown poor, young, brown skinned, "willing" potential converts in the murky waters of the Tonle Sap?

I for one would be quite interested to know his views on these matters and hope he chooses to answer these questions here. But I am unwilling to rush to Judgement when other people who also appear to be cynical towards evangelicals seem to indicate he is ok.

You have made some good points and raised a very valid and serious issue about the "Evangelical Wolf in sheep's clothing" aspect of disguised proselytization. You also made a very "good catch" jumping on the "Church of Christ" mention.

Unfortunately in your eagerness to judge and attack him you have undercut your own arguments. People on both sides of the "Evangelical" fence are telling you this.

its a shame to see some Cambodians influenced by the nonsense that most missionaries spew. And many locals follow the lead of the evil missionaries "please god give me an Iphone" is of the same ilk as "please god help me rip some money off these poor people."

I agree with the basic point of your post, but I do not think it is "Anti-semitic" (whatever that means these days as everyone who criticizes Israel is called that --- including Ghandi, Mandela, Carter etc.) to suggest that Jewish and specifically Pro-Israel forces pretty much dictate what Americans see when it comes to news and entertainment imagery about how religious/ethnic groups, faiths, and middle eastern politics are portrayed.

I cannot recall a single Hollywood movie that shows Jewish people in a bad light. The closest I can think of is the movie about the Jewish Mob boss Meyer Lansky ---- and even that painted a picture at the end of a sympathetic tired old man finally "Going Home" to his "Promised Land" of Israel.

Meanwhile channel surf at any random point in time and it is almost impossible to NOT see a sneering, evil Arab, with a bad accent, or a bomb going off with the Islamic Call to prayer in the background. Multiply this factor x 10 if you are browsing any Rupert Murdoch owned media.

I don't care how nonchalant or relaxed someone is about religion because when I see a western missionary talking to someone from a different culture, I cringe.

I am not religious and I do think very low of the establishments themselves and that often translates over to the people who belong to these various religious establishments. I could leave it at that if they would all just piss off and mind their business. I think religion sucks but I also think people have the right to practice whatever they want as long as it is not hurting others. I just think that no matter what, you shouldn't try to convert people over, especially if it borders on exploiting their lack of worldly views or education. Maybe I am opening a can of worms by saying this. I just think there is a big difference between a missionary trying to convert say myself or General Mack versus a 12 year old poor villager out in Takeo......

When I see the young Mormon guys riding their bicycles around, I feel nothing but pity for them. I am very embarrassed for them. I know they convert people, but for how long? I mean... after the handouts stop trickling in, how long does the typical Cambodian "Convert" stay converted and preaching the good word.
I'll give ya 500 Riel for it...

That's fairly absurd and shows how little you know about the American people/culture... which is ironic because normally this would just feed the global views of how uncultured the american populace is, by choice, but in this situation it's way easier to just blame the Jews?

There are a handful of reasons such themes don't sell well in movies, most of them being that American audiences don't like them. Though there is a major faction of Hollywood producing Mormon films pretty regularly... thing is, only Mormons are watching them so they have little funding and marketing, but several are still good. I suggest "The Saratov Approach", decent movie and one of the actors is a friend of mine so I'm obligated to help promote it ;-)

With Islam, have a look at the viewer backlash that the movie "Non-Stop" got, when the terrorist on the plane was a 9-11 family member and soldier and there is a helpful protagonist who is a muslim doctor. Americans were in outrage that a movie was made with a muslim semi-hero and a soldier villain played in what they saw as "reversed rolls". It was boycotted by several large groups after Lush Blimpbaugh leaked the plot and raised hell about it.

As for SC, he's teaching them English... what "themes" can he really be controlling to the point of influencing their religion?

What about the Cham Muslims? Do they make you cringe when you see them talking to a Khmer?
