I have to chip in here... I see many Asian gals in S.E. Asia partnering up and happily married with foreign guys more than 20 years their senior. Of course there are scam marriages, but there are more that are real.

Lovesick yes but does it come into it for marriage or even having a bf? $$$ and security seem to be the driving factor for that..Hearing quite a few stories via my GF where friends of hers are with a guy or planning to marry and openly tell her they don't really love the guy but he can provide security for her family.. Love then seems incidental afterwards or reserved for someone else?? Have you noticed khmer birthday wishes on FB... good luck, future happiness, have lots of money

Love is a luxury but it doesn't mean that it isn't a treasure.

I think in all parts of the world, love is something most will want to find. It's probably also true that in all parts of the world some people are less loveable than others, and some people regard it as less important than others or even just something that isn't relevant to them.

Perhaps you've identified the key difference which is that in south east asia, what others and in particular the family want for someone, isn't love it's financial security, and I think there's little argument that a lot of families in poor parts of Thailand and Cambodia 'expect' their daughters to provide for the family.

I saw a video of one girl I knew a little bit giving a birthday gift to her father. She had clearly gone to some trouble choosing the gift and was clearly excited to give the gift to him. He looked at it for a second and then ignored it and sat expectantly waiting for more. She took $100 out and gave it to him and he nodded his approval. Tbh he even looked like he was waiting to see if she'd give him more money. In the narrative above the video she explained how wonderful her father is. That's the problem. And of course there are many women who are in significantly worse positions even than that.

Hopefully a day will come when that culture changes, and where no Cambodian or Thai woman thinks of herself as a commodity or feels guilt for her family. I think in Cambodia a lot of girls want love but reach a point where they take financial stability for their family as the priority.

In my view, you should always give love a chance and see where it can lead you.

By the way I saw someone on the previous page describe love as a "concept". I found that a bit odd.

There was a time in Cambodia when every woman that you meet was 27 even the grey headed chick with no teeth was 27, as if the whole nation went into a bonking frenzy in the early 80's. That would of been a great year!
