I clicked hoping I'd find stories from the longest staying expats about their wild wild east days and what do I get. Stories about shit. Literally. :stir:
I was on the dole at 22 years old (2010) living in and out of hostels in Cairns, Australia where I saved enough to buy a ticket to Singapore from there I travelled by land to Phnom phen .

In Phnom phen I ended up staying in a 2$ guest house where I spent my days smoking 1$ joints, eating valium and drinking 0.50$ Angkor beers with an a Khmer lady I met on the boung ak lakeside.

She would let me borrow a her 50cc Honda chaly I would cruise along Monivong boulevard in the warm afternoons after the sun went down.

The lake was full of drugs back then you couldn't walk a metre without a Khmer dude whispering in your ear
"You want china white....? You want heroin....? You want smoke ganja....? "

I never got into the hard stuff but I did end up eating all types of pills from the calmette hospital pharmacy.

I remember a whole week with food, beer and accommodation was like 85$ and at the time the Aussie dollar was higher than the US dollar so I was getting like 4300KHR =1AUD I was living like a king on 100USD per week.......
Quote ] 22 years old (2010) ,,,,, Is this a '' Old Time story '' ?

Beers weren't 50 cents everywhere in 2010 or even in 2000. And it was Boueng Kak.

They still are 50 cents in 2018 and at the right mum And pops store.

Of course if one seems like a tourist the price will get pushed up a couple hundred riel.

That's Cambodian currency BTW 100KHR=0.025 USD

ok, one that doesn't involve people i cant mention.. :beer3:

Joined the peace corps in 1978, ( was tired of visiting somewhere and not feeling like i belonged), an after 3 days in Philadelphia was sent with 8 others to Bukavu Zaire. Took us about 36 hours by air to arrive, ( via Paris, Nairobi, Kigali ) and than a bus ride to Bukava located on lake Kivu. What a trip.

Anyway on our first outing we elected to visit the Gorillas in Virguna National park. Got hooked up with our pygmy guide who stood all of 4'8" an took off walking, outside the camp we all sat down and he pulled out his bong and we proceeded to get shit faced, he told us, ( well I think he told us, as we were not very good in the local dialect) that all was good and when we saw the gorillas, to stay still and never run

Walked for about 1 hour and than he told us to keep quiet and walk slowly, than around a corner he motioned to us to sit down.
Waited about 10 minutes an we heard something moving thru the bush. We didn't notice that he had slipped away behind us. As the large silverback approached. we heard this laughing really loud and turned to see him laughing his ass off about 50 meters behind us. The silver back reared up and stared pounding his chest, fuck standing still
We all took off to the laughter of off our guide. He thought it was the funniest thing ever>>>
wont ever forget that trip.
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

I don't know about gorillas but I remember going to a donkey show in Panama City in 1969...they were all the rage back then. The donkey was more attractive than the lady.

You agree that "Beers were always 50c everywhere" in 2010? That's nonsense.

Yeah, so the fact that you can buy a beer for 50c in a few dives and in stores means that beers cost 50c everywhere? We have some real geniuses on here.
