[ Lone ] Old Soldier

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

[ Lone ] Old Soldier

Post by Duncan »

My contribution to ANZAC day, a poem I wrote a few years ago, but never released it as I was never happy with the title. Today I am happy with it as it's just a couple of days till my 68 birthday, I cannot wait for forever to make everything in my life perfect. Enjoy.

[ Lone ] Old Soldier.

I once counted my friends on the battlefield,
And that was a long time ago,
Then I counted my friends on the parade ground,
But that was all just for show.

Then I counted my friends on the bar stools,
As they fell off one at a time,
And I saw them off to the pearly white gates,
On last count I had less than nine.

Today I count all my friends on one hand,
....I look around to see
......... Where they may be,
....................They're gone,
.................................. I'm alone,
................................................ There's no-one,
..................................................................... Just my shadow,
..................................................................................... My memories,
.......................................................................................................... And me.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Excellent, Duncan. Thanks for sharing.

I lost a couple of friends in a completely pointless war, at least the one you refer to was worth fighting, if that's any consolation
Jesus loves you...Mexico is great, right? ;)

I was just at the War memorial in Canberra, it was amazing. (except for rainy/windy Canberra.) Lots of exhibits on WWI.
