Fear not - there will be more and more Chinese tourists if all goes to plan.

Cambodian Tourism: " Ready for China" Strategy
Cambodia News: On November 22, 2020, at the 50th Annual Welcome Dinner hosted by the World Chinese Press Association in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Cambodian Tourism Minister Tang Kun said the country will launch its "Ready for China" strategy. Tang Kun said that Cambodia has regarded China as a strategic partner and as its most important source of international tourist market. Cambodia's future tourism development will be inseparable from the Chinese tourists and investors. To this end, Cambodia's Tourism Ministry has already launched a strategic plan (2016-2010) that includes a white paper entitled "Ready for China," ready to welcome Chinese tourists.

Tang Kun said that under the leadership of Prime Minister HE, Cambodia has achieved peace and political stability and maintained rapid growth in various fields, including tourism.
In 2016, Cambodia received 5 million international tourists, an increase of 5% over the same period of last year. Among them, there were about 830,000 Chinese tourists, an increase of 20% over the same period of last year.
This year, the ministry expects to attract about 1 million Chinese tourists. It is also estimated that at least 7 million international tourists will be received by 2020, of which 2 million are Chinese tourists. In order to achieve this goal, Cambodia will pursue its tourism development strategy, which is a beautiful and green tourism strategy with the best service attitude.

Tang Kun said that Cambodia with the wonderful Angkor Wat, Preah Vihear temple, three wave slope ancient temple (this year has just been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List) three world cultural heritage, as well as the beautiful beaches, the beauty of the Mekong River, traditional delicacies, and the bright smiles of Khmer people attract international tourists.

Tang Kun also mentioned that Cambodia has regarded China as a strategic partner and the most important source of international tourists in its cooperation with ASEAN, especially in tourism in ASEAN. Under the principle of ASEAN-China tourism cooperation, the two sides will consolidate and strengthen cooperation in various forms. In particular, in 2017, they have been listed as the "ASEAN-China Tourism Cooperation Year." Cambodia's future tourism development will be inseparable from the Chinese tourists and investors.

The signing of a memorandum of understanding on the implementation of the memorandum on cooperation in tourism signed by China Tourism Administration and Ministry of Tourism of Cambodia on 16 May 2017 in Beijing, China will be an important tool toward achieving the above objectives. Cambodia's tourism ministry has launched a strategic plan to attract Chinese tourists (2016-2010), including launching a "China ready" white paper to prepare Cambodia to host at least 2 million Chinese tourists by 2020.

The strategy has four key points:
First, to coordinate travel, provide Chinese tourists and investors with Visa on arrival and E-Visa, and provide one, two and three years entry visas, providing convenience for Chinese tourists to reach international airports and ports, setting up Chinese signs, and providing Chinese culture training to parties involved in the tourism industry such as the national immigration police, tour guides and flight attendants.

Second, make great efforts to deepen the Chinese market space in Cambodian tourism industry.

Third, to enhance the quality of tourism services through "China ready accreditation system."

Fourthly, to set up a "China-ready center," the first of which will be established in Siem Reap-Angkor.

However, JP Morgan noted that Macau was unlikely to be impacted as it is not considered an “overseas gambling market” by the Central government, and may in fact benefit from the move.

“In the long term, this move could be seen as ‘ring-fencing’ gambling demand/flow within China, which in turn could drive repatriation of demand to Macau,” they said.

Yes, Macau revenues were down 90% y/y up to September. Something needed to be done. Macau now doing a lot better but there is further to go to get back to normal.

If, as reported, we might expect increasing numbers of Chinese tourists, I suppose I ought to learn some useful phrases in preparation.
Would someone with the appropriate language skills be able to offer suitable translations of-

(For social settings.)
Wait for your turn.
You are rude and foul.

(everyday greetings)
Some proper Chinese swearwords and curses that might truly insult them.
(greeting VIPs)
Is your wife available for short time?

(discussions on history, geography and justice)
Free Tibet.
No, it isn't yours.

(culinary appreciation)
You don't have to eat everything that moves.
Must you spit, shout and eat simultaneously?

(gambling and fiscal responsibility)
Just give me all your money and go away.

When I was queuing up for my '13th day test' at the Khmer Soviet the other day, probably 80% of the queue were Chinese - I say that, its a guess. They mostly seemed to know each other, plus there were three VIP looking Chinese dudes with really shiny shoes who jumped to the front of the queue and no-one seemed to mind, so my assumption was that most of the guys were workers and the three queue jumpers were bosses.
