Phnom Penh is now also the most vaccinated capital city in the world

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Amazing how quickly they've done it

As westerners, it's in our DNA to only ever criticise those in power. There's no such thing as politicians doing a 'good job'. If they don't mess up and do something well, that's just 'doing their job' as opposed to doing a 'good job'.

But credit where credit is due, the Cambodian government have done an incredible job with their vaccination program. I had my second shot a few months ago and both times it was orderly, organised and the staff were very friendly. I'm not sure how they managed to be such a success. I'm guessing the drastically lower population helps a lot - forgetting the number of vaccines you need, it's just logistically easier to vaccinate a few million than tens of millions of people.

As another poster pointed out, it is concerning what's happening in Israel and other countries that have highly vaccinated populations at the moment. The UK are already talking about another lock-down in October, even though they have a very high vaccination rate and another wave has not yet started.

Let's see, but good on the government here for what they've managed to achieve.

The only 3 people I know who have not been vaccinated are and old English guy, 70+ with no proper excuse beyond "couldn't be bothered", another 70+ guy from Texas who has "done a lot of research on it [YouTube] and decided not to get any" and another American from Florida who still believes they are counting Donald Trump's votes; I am not kidding!

Everyone else I have asked has had some.

That is why i can't understand all the moaning about restrictions. It's not forever and was never intended to be.
imo
If the rate for PP is 99%, then isn't that high enough for you? What exactly will be enough for you?
Bitte. NObody on the planet thinks that 99% figure is correct. Do you?
Even if it was correct, it refers to 1st dose only, of adults only, in Phnom Penh only.
So apart from being wrong it is also totally meaningless.

I realise in this post fact world there is this new cult who like to deny reality and "experts" and the weight of science - but unfortunately for them, HE (and ScoMo and Jacinda) are still believers in all those things.

Apart from accepting the science - I don't think it is my job to be a know-it-all White Ant trying to sabotage such an important national effort.
i'll say that again if you like "White Ants" "Important National Effort"

AND also - i beleive those white ant ****s who refuse to get their head around that are delaying my travel plans.
but that just a personal thing.

PS, in case anybody really did miss it - and are not just being *****s because they think they know better
The Plan in Cambodia (and Au and NZ) is suppression until very soon when we have 70-80% of the at-risk population vaxxed.
Then we learn to live with it, but from a scientifically proven much better place.
Some places are letting it rip - fine. Cambodia (and Oz) have got a different important national plan.

finis. i have only so much patience for talking to bricks.

That article sounds like a rehash of old articles from Khmer Times etc. Apparently, they are mulling tour group visits at first, not a free for all for independent travellers.

And the 75% herd immunity (mentioned in the article) is a fallacy, you can still get infected and some will still get sick with Covid, despite 100% vaccination. That was the bad news after the good news of the vaccine making it less likely you get sick. You can't win them all.

This is the reality that governments need to come to terms with; Covid is here, it's here to stay and it needs managing. Zero Covid policies are futile if you have any intention to return life to normality. Vaccinate all you can, deal with the anti-vaxers and then bite the bullet (Australia).

Countries like Cambodia with very poor public healthcare systems are going to be constantly busy with Covid patients the moment you allow people to act like it was 2019 again. The government is going to have to spend some more money on their hospitals if it want's all those lovely tourist dollars again.

Riverside and most of Daun Penh is looking more and more like an economic wasteland as every month passes. Another year of this and even an open door policy might not resuscitate that patient.
