Noise

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Noise

Post by Popeye »

Now for all this noise (music etc ) that is made for weddings and funerals for everyone to hear in a radius of half a km. Is this really necessary? I have been told many times that it is traditional, now to me that is a load of crap, as for it being traditional it would have to go back many generations and in those days "There Was No Amplifiers driving enormous speakers.
Samouth, do you have an answer?

It's the "look at me look at me" syndrome
Once you've read the dictionary, every other book is just a remix.

Is it any different to people dinging church bells all Sunday morning, or doing the call to prayer? At least most of the time it's only a single tinny tannoy.

Foreigners whining about Khmer weddings and funerals happens so consistently and has been going on so long that it has almost become a tradition in itself.

It's very different to church bells, they usually toll at hours when people are not sleeping.

Call to prayer, can't say, but I do know Cairo municipality implemented a decibel limit years back after the mosque noise wars.

Weddings are OK, but funeral music can start at 3am, and sometimes goes on for 10 days.

One question for the critics of the OP: do you seriously think this would be tolerated opposite the PM's residence?

Wasn't Martinis closed/relocated because of ' noise'?

We dislike it, so do many Khmers.

And don't forget, the Royal Palace Boulevard was closed on account of ' noise'.

Are you going to criticise The King for being culturally insensitive? Thought not.

Apologists.

Just a point of fact: The Royal Palace Blvd (Sothearos) is not closed due to noise, regardless of the government's stated excuse. The Palace issued a letter saying that they made no request to close the road.

Whem I see those fucking tannoy speakers being put up near my home, I wish for a rocket launcher!. It's the only thing they call tradition or culture that I hate.
It wouldn't be so bad if they played just the plinky plonky music or songs that are popular but then you got something that sounds like George Formby on acid at the wrong speed, then some jolly conversation betwen man and woman, maybe comedy?, even at funerals!) The same shit every time on a loop! All this at such a volume that it's distorted/ too much for the amp/speaker! They say its so everyone in the local area knows what's happening, maybe only the monk chanting part, but now they can they just phone each other to say " hey, free booze at Om's funeral down the road" they don't need to be that loud!

Fictitious? Not sure what that means. But yes, they were wrong if they reported that. The letter from the Palace was published in a few places, including 440. The road in front of the Palace was shut for political reasons. "Noise" was the government's excuse. In fact it wouldn't even make sense to shut that road for 'noise' since the King's residence borders Street 19 at the back of the Palace grounds, not Sothearos.
