Noise cotrol

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Must remember this law.

Section 2

An act to create sound or noise which disturbs the quietness of other people is
punishable by a fine from 1,000 (one thousand) Riels to 10,000 (ten thousand) Riels.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

The catch is that what you define as noise differs greatly to what the locals do.

For them, it's listening to any western music/activity. For you it's everything, all day, ever day, because if locals are not making noise they are not happy.

A happy noise is good - kids singing on their way to school in the morning - even if it's early.
My ideas about noise and what is early have changed while in Cambodia.
I used to hate noise with a passion, especially any noise first thing in the morning. I don't hear it so much now, or it doesn't bother me so much most of the time.
First time I arrived in PP, we had a "soundproof" room with no windows in the bowels of a concrete hotel. I felt like there was a party going on all night long in the street, it was so noisy for me. So from the moment I got to Cambodia I realised that I was going to have to chill out about noise levels.
And as Vlad says, we define noise differently - dogs barking all night is not a "noise" here, but in some countries the neighbours would call the police.

Impact drills at 7am on a Saturday morning that echo through the walls are my definition of noise.

The neighbours on both sides regularly using hammer drills on the shared walls between 7pm and midnight. I take no shame in using power tools in the kitchen these days, let's share the love.

Way to go, Just wait long enough for the walls to fall down from all those vibrations, and your neighbours will be your flatmates. Then you can really share the love.

I've spent time pondering what it is they can still find to attach to the walls... must be falling down by now.
