Noise cotrol

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

I moved to Cambodia as I could not handle the noise in Vietnam. Compared to Ha Noi, Siem Reap is an oasis of tranquility.

I fight fire with fire. Try to sell your crappy phones or such across the street from me by using loudspeakers turned to max warp volume and you get it back two fold or more. Fortunately for the last two years I've lived in a compound that doesn't allow weddings, funerals and loud parties.

I think the definition of noise is cultural.

I attended a wedding in Battambang and they played (undistorted) Santana for a lot of the time, I actually enjoyed it.

Most Khmers don't enjoy hard rock, so they complain about that.

Carlos has not been hard rock since 1976 or there about. Try SLAYER. makes my ears bleed but then again I recall my father's reaction to Chuck Berry and his ilk.

Wasn't pretty.

Phan Thiet, Vietnam ca. 1995:

Karaoke to the left of me, Karaoke to the right of me (no TV then so every house was a family Karaoke).

Terrible noise, worse singing.

Bought the biggest stereo I could find and put on Pink Floyd as loud as it would go (Dark Side of the Moon). Cops were there in 2 minutes and told me to shut it down. When I pointed out my neighbors I was told that, unlike Pink Floyd, that was Vietnamese culture....

I first saw Slayer at Donnington, they were brilliant. I've seen them about a dozen times since and they're the most inconsistent live band ever. They are either superb or dogshit with nothing in between. When I saw them at Wacken (Germany) they were so bad that the fans built a bonfire and burned Slayer merchandise on it for 2 hours after their set.

Six years ago I had a home in Boeng Salang. Then is was pretty much exclusively Khmer...not sure now. My neighbor started doing karaoke at 6 in the morning blasting it. My reply was Nine Inch Nails equally as loud. They got the message.

When I lived in Phsar Toul Kork many years ago, we lived opposite the side with the 15 hair-dressing salons.

They started playing Khmer music loud around 5am, so I move the speakers out onto the balcony, put on 20 hits of Deep Purple, pressed repeat, and we went out until 11am.

Silence when we got back and turned of fteh music.

Never a problem again.

Just joking as I love them but I would at least have thought about it...
