NGO Help

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! NGO Help

Post by EvieP »

Hi All

Not sure if you can help… I am trying to help an orphanage in Siem Reap that is desperately struggling but I need to get them registered officially to be able to do any real good on a bigger scale..

How easy is this to do and realistic?

Hope someone can help..

Thank you

Oh dear. They're operating illegally? I'd just give them $$$$$ and let them sort it out.

No I don't think they are operating illegally? I have been working with this project for several years.. I am trying to get them regular help rather than sporadic help but for companies to work with that structure it needs to be registered.

This is one man (a former street child) fighting to give other kids an education and opportunity that he never had..

I need an international registered set up to be able to get global help for him to give stability and security to the children.

Just the word "orphanage" grows a feeling in my stomach, and the Siem Reap location adds to that feeling. Are you sure sure sure sure sure (5 times sure) that it is genuine? Have you verified that the kids are actual orphans who don't have any parents?

Orphanage/Childrens home yes I am sure that these kids are either orphans or abandoned by their parents that couldn't afford to feed them.

Here they have an education and a safe keeping.

If anyone has any ideas how to set this up that would be most helpful. I have been working with this home for 4+ years but what they need now is more than I can offer myself.

Really "abandoned", or do the parents receive monetary compensation for letting their children stay at the orphanage? Sorry about being skeptical, but that's how "orphanages" usually operate here...

Thank you for all the questions JanKrohn. I have however lived in Asia for 10 years and worked with projects in Asia for 10 years including India, Indonesia and Cambodia and am well aware how things work. They currently do not have money to feed the children never mind anyone external however I am not on here to defend myself or the help I am trying to do I am merely looking for suggestions on how to move things forward. No more skepticism needed as it is not actually helping what I am trying to do!

Takeoman, thank you, will certainly look into this now.

No need to defend yourself. From the first couple of postings it was not really clear whether you were just another voluntourist looking for another place to dump excess money where it does more harm than good to the children. Obviously that's not the case. I've not replied to the thread to accuse you.

After setting up larger scale global help, I'd still advise though to keep an eye on the place, especially if there's a correlation between the number of kids and the incoming funds. I've probably seen too much crap in this country in the past 4 years... However, a local who accepts personal sacrifices to help disadvantaged children would be really really encouraging.

Hi there, thanks for that. Yes there will be a huge need on the part of the 'foreigners' getting involved to have a lot of accountability here and that is something I am going to have to control..

I have seen in India that although the structure can be sound - those helping within it - housekeepers etc can be the ones taking from the children and the main founders don't or can't see it.

When there is such great poverty there is always huge desperation and corruption.. lets hope I can try to get this set up in such a way that its limited as much as possible.
