News on Otres

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Any sane person would spell them looze and loose. But universities aren't sane. That's why they can't agree on a common terminology for grammatical and verbal structures etc. How many terms for the present continuous are there?
It pisses me right off. :plus1:

"Continuous and progressive aspects
Page issues
The continuous and progressive aspects (abbreviated cont and prog) are grammatical aspects that express incomplete action ("to do") or state ("to be") in progress at a specific time: they are non-habitual, imperfective aspects.

In the grammars of many languages the two terms are used interchangeably. This is the case with English: a construction such as "He is washing" may be described either as present continuous or as present progressive. However, there are certain languages for which two different aspects are distinguished. In Chinese, for example, progressive aspect denotes a current action, as in "he is getting dressed", while continuous aspect denotes a current state, as in "he is wearing fine clothes".

As with other grammatical categories, the precise semantics of the aspects vary from language to language, and from grammarian to grammarian. For example, some grammars of Turkish count the -iyor form as a present tense;[1] some as a progressive tense;[2] and some as both a continuous (nonhabitual imperfective) and a progressive (continuous non-stative) aspect.[3].

Is an article in English superfluous if it changes the meaning?
Need time to think about your question again?

Christ, there must be a nest somewhere.

Why don't you bless us with your extensive knowledge of English grammar instead of mocking my question? Are you the same to your students?

Or, if Hanno is right about it being different in German, you might not even get the point as you don't speak German?!

Apologies for my poor English. Or should I say a slip on the keyboard "ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo".
Always "hope" but never "expect".

One could say " He acted like a right Donald Trump". Or even I guess, " He acted like a Donald Trump".
I always tell my students English is chacoout.

So what's going on? Are they opening an advanced English school at Otres, or something?

That would be good. Then the school's grammar police can go around checking the spelling on signage and menus, etc.

The very first thing they should do is employ an army of Vietnamese beach cleaners. The Khmer are absolutely crap at it. :stir:

Just spent four weeks at Otres. It's great... a totally chilled vibe... because most of the barang locals are too stoned to notice the simultaneous mud and clouds of choking dust from the endless parade giant trucks/cement mixers for the Chinese developments.

Can you say "shit hole"?
You could be next.
