IF you share, make sure u credit the photographer!!
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Great photos, and precise writing. Brilliant website.
Re. the 'Who? NZ photo-journalist', his name escapes me at the moment. Does Alan sound right? The guy I'm thinking of was very tall and from Gisborne.
I envied him when he got a job at $100 a week working for the US embassy during the final months.
A few years later he went to Afghanistan to take pix.

Re: New website with photos and stories from the 1970s
The wonders of google.
He is Terence White.
I'm incapable of copying images, but if someone can google to 'Terence white Afghanistan images', there is a pix of him out in the field in Cambodia. And the initial pix ssowa him with the legendary anti-Taliban fighter Massod, often described as one of the greatest guerilla leaders of the last century.
Apparently Terry became the longest serving foreign correspondent in Afghanistan.
In the 1980s when I happened to be home in NZ I saw in the paper that he was exhibiting his Afghan photos in Auckland so I went up hoping to see him, but unfortunately he was nowhere near Auckland at the time.

I know that her doppelganger is alive and well here in Kampot. Beautiful...Duncan wrote: ↑Tue Apr 17, 2018 12:53 pm I really love those old-time black and white photos and the one thing that sticks in my mind is the girls in the portraits section, of how beautiful

I wonder where Annih is now ?

Dont know what it is, but there's something that makes him stand out from the rest.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Re: New website with photos and stories from the 1970s
Duncan, I did say Terry was tall.
He used to carry a heavy camera, and once regaled us with how he'd gone out and the Lon Nol soldiers began calling 'Kiwi! Kiwi!', leaving him nonplussed as to how they knew he was a New Zealander, let alone that they knew to use 'Kiwi'.
But then he finally caught out that they were in fact excitedly yelling 'TV! TV!', thinking they were going to be on screen.
And as for the outfit Duncan, it was the '70s, dude.
This morning, once I remembered his name, I found the most astonishing 2013 radio interview with him on The Story. He slipped into Afganistan during the Soviet takeover, spending a very extended period with the Mujahedeen He moved to Kabul when Moscow pulled out, then remained in that city as the Mujahedeen split into their rival factions. While the handful of other Western journalists fled as rockets rained on the city, he stayed on even as all the windows of his house blew out. He was eventually wounded so badly that at first the Afghan doctors didn't even contemplate trying to save him. But he survived to be medivaced to Paris and then on to recuperation at home in NZ. He returned to Kabul just as the Taliban took over the city and lived through quite a long period of their initial harsh rule before being expelled, only to go back once more when the Americans went in.
Looking at Colin's photo of a slack-looking Terry, lounging with his dirty bare feet up, who could have guessed that he'd become such a respected authority on Afghanistan.

Re: New website with photos and stories from the 1970s
Just to clarify, Terry was not a combat photographer in Cambodia.
His high-target clothing illustrates that.
Although he did get into the real stuff (plus, plus!!) in his subsequent decades in Afghanistan, the photo of him posing in front of relaxed and unarmed Lon Nol soldiers is probably as dramatic as it got for him on his one or two forays to the field while he was here.
Though the Khmer Rouge had threatened the city all through the dry season of 1973-1974, they'd been pushed well back in the subsequent wet. This was when Terry first showed in town.
Indeed things had gone very still for quite some distance all around the perimeter. That extended calm got shattered on the final evening of the year, and going outside the city became rather hairy again.
Anyone interested in the combat-journalist aspect of the Cambodian War is referred to One Crowded Hour, the biography of the legendary Australian cameraman Neil Davis.
