This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. The best of those was that it became Cambodian's very own, unique, beach holiday destination.
It was always 10/1 locals on holiday, outnumbering everyone else.
Watching Khmers discover and delight in the beachy lifestyle was just so wonderful to watch.
That experience was stolen from all Cambodians and this is the real tragedy, in my book.
GF's sister and whole family went to the beach in snv and wanted a good seafood meal, the owners came up to them and said his restaurant is for Chinese not locals.
:please:
WOW - that is stunning.. I am sorry to hear about her experience.

I do know many hard working Chinese here and luckily, so far, have found them welcoming human beings - love the tea-ceremony, beers and snacks.

On the other hand, there are many 'new-generation' Chinese taking advantage of SHK and their treatment of yr GF family was deplorable.

My business partner is from Malaysia - of Chinese heritage and when he visited his wife's family in China, even he didn't like the 'attitude'.

I first found out about this new generation when at the airport departure lounges - really really loud and mad pushing to the front queue jumping.

There were some freebie snacks at a duty free and one Chinese lady just filled her bags with them all.

Don't underestimate the spirit of speculation of Chinese investors, they will be the one go in there, I bet USD1 with you.

From the sihanoukville expats FB group today

whatever price they throw at you - cut it at least in half. Rental prices have dropped by up to 75% over the past few weeks, there are suddenly thousands of empty apartments all over town. Landlords are desperate to get any tenants to pay back bank loans....

Sihanoukville at least used to have a few redeeming qualities. Sitting on the beach with beers and muk in the afternoon was a decent pastime, as was a trip to the islands. Some good restaurants and a stopover at Tony’s bar (name?) filled some time.

Kep/Kampot was always my preference, mostly the people I preferred over the Sihanoukville crowd.

Not sure Sihanoukville can ever recover, a bunch of abandoned unfinished properties and high violence and crime.

Some brave talk from SHV but also some brutal facts (as selected above).
So now the strategy is hope.
II was recently in Ao Nang and also in Phuket. The Chinese tourists in those places looked good on the whole. Nicely dressed, good style, behaving well. Many young couples. I have never seen Chinese tourists like this in PP. Maybe in Siem Reap? I cannot imagine those tourists being happy to visit SHV as it now stands.
As for the hoped for new investment, look at the chart in this short video,

This thread explains the trade dispute well and (if you scroll down far enough) the economic problems that China faces:
