Need help in naming a hotel (REWARD)

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

There are a few hotels in Phnom Penh with numbers, The 252 (on street 252), 240 (on street 240), Hotel 9 (was on street 9, now closed and called Omana) and Number 9 (used to famously be at the lake, is now on street 258)

A possible problem you might get with '1984' could be motodops and taxis getting confused (I know there's no street 1984, but those dops can get confused easily). Your guest: "I go 1984, street 123, o.k $1?"

And what about web search results? I've no idea really, but would '1984 Phnom Penh' or 'Phnom Penh Guesthouse' pull up a guesthouse with a number at the top of the results?

A further problem I might have would be that '1984' just don't doesn't sound that relaxing.

I'd also seriously suggest you run it past a fortune teller. Not that I believe in any thing like that, but Khmer's can do and you wouldn't want a number that's considered bad luck.

Perfect. So, I also wanna know from people who have no idea about the book. So, to a person who doesn't know about the book, how does the name sound?

Only the lobby might have 1984 theme, rest of the hotel will just focus on subtle artwork marking the events of year 1984 . The book is just an undercurrent and a familiar name - which might grab some book readers' attention

And 1408 was a mindfuck indeed.

id be interested to know the importance of the year and what it had to do with Cambodia,
if i was to do some artsy hotel i would do something like "The Khmer Golden Years Hotel" and have it themed and decorated in 1960's/70's when Cambodia was the Pearl of Asia (another possible name lol) (pre-war before all culture/music was pretty much wiped out)
with pictures of all the famous singers of the time like Sinn Sisamouth, Ros Sereysothea, Pan Ron, Houy Meas, and all their Album Artwork etc

floor 1 - january 01, 02, 03 etc
floor 2 - febuary 01 02 03 so on and so fourth

It's not a matter of thick skin mate. Its about respecting the context. If I am trying to have a serious business discussion, while you insist on acting like a 16-yr old, it's just disrespectful.

I know, this is the internet, but let's at least -try- and be adults.

The hotel will begin siem reap but you are spot on. The not relaxing feeling point- It is a part of my "negatives" of having 1984 as a name. I was just hoping the intrigue would outpace the 'wtf'

And that fortune teller idea is brilliant. This is Asia and things like that matter here. China has the highest numbers of annual tourists to siem reap and the last thing I need is a damn unlucky number, like you said

Brilliant

Any suggestions then(other numbers?)

That's actually a pretty good idea. I like the room number idea especially.

I want a number as the name. 1984 was just a few people's suggestions

Do you have any other significant date/clock-time/number that comes to mind?

Yes. Been doing hotels /restaurants for over 16yrs.

And every time, I use forums in the respective countries to get ideas.
