Moving to Phnom Penh in January 2020

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

James:
You are disappointing the people that care for you the most and society that has contributed positively to your job and financial well being in CA. That is not something that should be taken lightly. Dont fall for this switch simply based on some hooker (joking here) making you want to do it. I too want to do what you do and buy a condo in PP. Cancel your decision and ticket. Alternately, perhaps you can request more time off from your current job and travel a few months at a time. DO NOT throw away what you have in CA.

I feel I have learned everything I could possibly learn from this type of forum post/topic. I already bought my ticket last month when I earned my TEFL so there is no turning back for me I have invested too much time studying teaching and taking my exams and passing them. It would be counter productive to turn and run now after about 6 months of preparation. I'm sorry that some people are having such a bad time and i hope you find a way to make it better for yourselves. looking forward to meeting people out there with a positive outlook please feel free to PM me or talk via whatsapp. i wont be reading or replying here further.

thanks again.

Good luck to you, hope you enjoy your time in Cambodia. I lived in Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville on and off from 2015 to this year. I do miss the place, the nights out, the craziness , chaos and the good friendships I made. I had a well paid job there which helped. There are pros and cons to living anywhere really, nothing is perfect.Cambodia drove me crazy at times. But as long as you focus on the positives and haven't burnt your bridges back home, then I think you will enjoy the experience and the challenges. For me personally, it always felt like it was a temporary place. There are things back here in Australia I like a lot, but I do sometimes long for the spontaneous nights out in PP, the street life, the feeling of being somewhere that is 'developing' etc. I should hopefully be visiting there again soon, which i am really looking forward to.

Some people seem to have the idea, if you acknowledge there are problems in Cambodia, you cant be happy in Cambodia. You can acknowledge there are problems and be happy.

If you understand reality, you can make better choices and avoid many problems, and when challenges come along, you can deal with them better.

The people who bury their head in the sand, wont know how to cope with a lot of these situation.

I know, there are a small number of people who aren't happy. But most of the people who are being honest about the problems are happy.

Some of the people who aren't happy, would have made different choices if people had been honest with them in the past.

Some of the people who bury their head in the sand aren't happy either. They are just trying to make it sound like it is good.

I believe we need to be honest with newcomers about the risks and challenges they will face, so they can avoid some problems.

There are problems in every part of the world, but you can still be happy.

Don’t forget the “ gifts from god “ or acts of god or the call of nature the
annoying obligatory power outages for no reason .
Don’t be happy , worry
No working during drinking hours
Power affects the router ( no instructions ) to recover quickly
Takes a long time to turn lite from orange ( snafu) to blue = good to go /

I wouldn’t mind moving back now. I have been away nearly six years and time has flown. My health has stabilised, I am capable of working long hours again and I am over Australia.
My Khmer is worse than it was despite living with the Khmer family for two years. The little one can’t speak at all now, her English is nearly perfect and she has learnt colloquial Australian.
We go to YouTube some nights and practice speaking Khmer together. I still have bad memories of rats and rubbish and wedding music and I don’t drink anymore so the cheap beer means nothing.
The hotel for retirees that was talked about recently got me thinking. I could easily live somewhere like that on the pension and the little bit of investment income I have left.

Could you work in Australia or America for a while, and save some money?

Hey everyone it's me again. I have been in Phnom Penh for just under a month now and I have two jobs. One teaching english at a great international school and another working at a bar at night for minimal hours just to stay busy. Have a great group of local and expat friends who do sports and other activities and I love this city so far.

I feel sorry for all the negative low motivation people that have commented on this post and previous posts in a negative way. It truely sucks to be you I hope your life gets better 😞

Anyway for all the positive people that have commented thanks for you support it kept me going when I was seriously doubting myself due to the miserable ones that seem to always have something bad to say.

Wish you all the best 💪🏼
