Moving and raising house

Post by explorer »

When you travel around Cambodia, you will see a lot of houses being raised. A higher house is better when it floods. A high house is also a status symbol.

I saw a couple of different houses being raised today. One particular house was built back on the block. They are moving it approximately 15 meters closer to the road, and raising it maybe 2 meters. To move and raise the house is costing them $1500. This includes moving a concrete and brick upstairs bathroom. The rest of the house is wooden. It also includes new support columns, and the stairs made to go higher. If they left it in the existing location and only raised it, it would cost $800.

Construction work is cheap in Cambodia compared to affluent countries. Workers get less than $10 per day.

If it was me, instead of moving the house forward, I would build a new room on the front. It would cost a little more, the house would be bigger, and you could make it modern looking. It would not be as close to the road, but I dont think that matters.

There is a slightly cheaper way-

The other half’s family property used to be well set back from the road. Despite this, you could feel the vibration of the heavy trucks through the structure.
Now that work has begun on upgrading NR5, the house is much closer to the road.

I can’t help but think that the entire structure is going to get a serious shaking in the near future.

$1500 is a lot of happy hour Cambodia draught. How many English teachers does it take to come up with that kind of money?

If instead of moving the house, they built an entire new house, it would cost around $10,000. The land is big enough for two houses. One day, when those working in Phnom Penh move back to the village, they could have a house for them, and a house for grandma.

I was in another village, a couple of kilometers away. They are building new houses there. You can buy a house block for around $5000. If somebody actually bought there, they may want an extra large block and pay $10,000 to $15,000. This is in a farming village, not in a town.

Hey explorer you don’t get much of a house for $10,000. A small timber house cost more than that five years ago.
