Morals

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

I was never attached to materialism since I was a kid. After I was forced to study accounting as my 1st major in university I turned to marketing and it helped to broaden my thought.

I will put out my thoughts in term of the average Joe and agreeing with you. Why even bother moving to a developing country when you still long for luxury, concerning about malaria and shits. I am a hobo (used to), and traveled over 30 countries and I am doing just fine.

Most chicks turned nuns and dudes became monk in their old age trying to rectify their evil past. At age of 10 I knocked doors to doors trying to raise fund for World Vision but when I see things in reality it was disturbingly different. In term of the rich people-- lets just say you have a nice big mansion, driving the latest car, private jet...got everything you longed for...whats next? Hence most turned to philanthropy and the NGOs love it!

My brother is working for a bank and he's almost making three times as much money as I do. I'm not bothered by that. He still works for his own money. Unlike those bastards that run the garment factories in Cambodia for example. They have their wealth from running sweatshops and outright exploiting people who really don't have a choice. The seamstresses in their factories work hard and get a pittance out of it, whilst the factory owner doesn't work nearly as hard and reaps all the profits from that business. How is that fair? How could you condemn these workers if they reclaimed some of that wealth that they generated but that was taken from
Too bad. You were off to a good start but reasonings like this firmly puts you in the retarded moron category. There are so many holes in this grand theory I wouldn't know where to start if I had the time.

the rich do the most 'good'.
they share - often massively.

ask the well-earners from the middle class: they will say "why should I donate money, the rich should..."
I'm sure this varies by country, but in the US, a country with many wealthy people, the poor give more.

And this has been going on for years; The Chronicle of Philanthropy releases a study every year and the poorest always give a significantly higher percentage of their incomes.

I'm sure everyone's theory for why that is will probably align with their philosophical and political beliefs.

Interesting topic... In short, I'd say the OP is bang on. I do believe Cambodia makes me throw a lot of stuff out the window. Especially in traffic, I yield to NO ONE. I'm absolutely brutal and will cut off everyone except monks and ajays. Since everyone is so selfish here, one must become somewhat selfish to survive. This kind of applies to other situations as well, but it's most blatant on the roads.

Wow pretty good assessment. I also see the longer the expat has been here the more selfish he has become. I got 1 expat buddy who has lived here some 8 years. I go out drinking with him...I buy a bottles he drinks on it..but never returns the favor. In fact! I put him down as a reference on my CV. Someone called him and had nothing positive to say and told me don't do that again. Very disappointing.

as i age an my years in se asia turn to decades, i find life becomes slower, i yield more, give time to the small things, share more

I think once u get over the hump of say 15 years, u start to see things differently

LOL. The last thing I wanted to do right now is giving people advice. Jacket's original post and followed by MekongMouse made me reflect on my own situation.
