Cambodia News,( Phnom Penh): The Miss Grand Cambodia 2022 beauty pageant has finally been officially launched, with the press conference being held at the Rosewood Hotel on the 36th floor of the Vattanac Capital in the presence of big business and artists, and most especially featuring the appearance of the 35 beautiful contestants, in the most appropriate traditional Khmer style.

Controversy as Miss Grand Cambodia 2022 contestant is described as ‘Vietnamese-Khmer Kampuchea Krom’

The program manager of Miss Grand Cambodia 2022 is facing a storm of criticism after he described a contestant as being ethnically ‘Vietnamese-Khmer Kampuchea Krom’.

The comments were made by Mr. In Sophin, general director of Mohahang Company, which administers the pageant, in a recent radio broadcast.

Mr In was aiming to highlight the uniqueness of the competition, which has candidates representing the provinces and capitals and countries where Cambodians live.

Mr In then described contestant Hang Soryan as a ‘Vietnamese-Khmer Kampuchea Krom hybrid’ and said that when introducing herself, she spoke the Khmer Kampuchea Krom Tong language.

At this point, Ms. Chhorn Sreneth responded to Mr. In Sophin’s statement, saying that the Khmer Krom are not of Vietnamese descent.

She said that as a Khmer Kampuchea Krom herself, she did not agree with the words that Mr. In used

Ms Chhorn added that the phrase ‘Vietnamese-Khmer-Krom hybrid’, would cause pain for the Khmer Kampuchea Krom ethnic group as they are Cambodian – not Vietnamese or a Vietnamese hybrid.

Did the previous 2022 contestant Hang Soryan get the boot for not being Cambodian enough?
