I miss Cambodia

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

its seems many on here consider that they have a home elsewhere

"But I find I last about 2 weeks back home" be it parents, relatives, close friends, work etc
how many go "back/elsewhere" to earn money to come back to SE Asia
For me thailand is HOME (and has been almost half my life), i don't have an home anywhere else

How many years does it take living overseas till your overseas home, is your true home?

I'm one of those, but it's not a '' home '' it's a house. Every six months I spend two weeks in it, mow the lawn and the neighbours lawn, trim the hedge, and the neighbours hedge , and anything else that needs maintenance just to pass the time while waiting for my next plane trip out of the country to ''home ''. There's a big difference between a house and a home.
surely everyone has heard of the Proverb "home is where the heart is" ??

who says you only have to have one home? who says you cant love living in 2 places?

Cambodia is my home, has been for the past 4-5 years, i spend 8 months of my year living there, my heart lays here, the way of life fits me here perfectly like a glove...

England is also my home, its where i spent 25 years of my life growing up, all my family live here, now i only spend about 4 months a year living there, my home is my family home, if it wasnt for my family i would probably never go back...

i work when im back in England but i dont go back to work, i go back to England to see my family, i work because i can, because im self employed and earn decent coin, what i earn in those 4 months gives me a comfortable social lifestyle for the remaining 8 months in Cambodia without the need to work, Going back to England for a few months gives me a chance to sober up a bit as well haha

im only entering my 5th year, each year i get more and more settled in Cambodia and the more alien i feel in England plus the travelling back and forth is becoming tiring, moving from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh and seeking work is my next POA im seriously considering, although living by the sea is one perk i like, it stimulates my endorphin's lol

Jamie;
as u dont earn any money in Cambodia, so dont u work cause u have too? ( as most do), how would u survive if u didn't go back? Not much demand for a Barang bricklayer LOL

To me home is where u live all the time, where you go back to when u travel from, where u belong, where ur family and friends are, where u make a living ( if u still need to)
yep more than just a house for sure.
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

i also put, if i didint have family back in England i probably wouldnt go back,
if i didnt go back to England i would take looking for a job here more seriously,
i actually got offered a job at a company my mate works for $1100 per month, which to me is peanuts but its enough to get by and keep me out of mischief,
if they had offered me it a few weeks before i would have taken it but i had already made plans to go back, if i get offered the same/similar job when i get back, id take it, as i said, its getting tiring going back and forth, but what ive been doing, has been working well for me, cant grumble at only working 4 months a year

You are a brickie Jamie? I don't miss Cambodia anymore but I do miss my family. Going back to Cambodia a month a year would be enough for me.

I don't think of house or home either. I think only of community: local and expat neighbours, good food stores, good coffee shops and restaurants; peacefulness and quiet if possible; trees and walking areas if possible. I like to walk to my destinations and don't really like to take a motorbike and certainly not a car in this environment. To me, a house is just a building. It can be sold off, rented, wrecked, taken over. Same with a car or motorbike. It's the people you "live with" that count for everything. I've made the best friends (expats) of my entire life in Thailand. But I'm not cut out to live here anymore and moving back to Cambo this year.

As far as the home country is concerned, it's a place I came from and culture I grew up in. I still appreciate that. But live there? No, there's little I want back home.
