I miss Cambodia

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

When family/friends visit Cambodia I usually promise that I'll go to the temples with them, then bail at the last minute and go drink beer anyways.

I did visit S-21 when my friend from Indonesia came for a visit. She had to check out the killing fields on her own.

Never seen the dump.

Work for drinks in Kampot? Sure.

Got me there. English breakfast every time.
Love baw baw with salt for the chronic mekong hangover.

I would much prefer a Thai kao dtom over a Khmer baw baw.

im not one for doing touristy things really, in 3 years ive spent 3 hours at Angkor Wat and i visited S-21 (drove out to the killing fields but didnt have time to go in)
i did all that on my 5th and 6th day in Cambodia 3 years ago, unfortunatly my Camera broke and i lost all the photos i took, tbh when i first came to cambodia i didnt really know much about the place, probably why i got so sucked in when i first arrived,
i do plan to re-visit Angkor Wat early next year, still undecided about the killing fields tbh

Haven't been inside Angkor archeological park since 2003
Many years ago, I promised myself to try my ID card there but on the rare occasions I was in SR since, I was only passing through. Usually with great numbers of in laws in tow, for a trip further north, once also with a handcuffed car thief in custody of my passenger... :whip:

The only time I have been to these place is while escorting young, free and single tourist. So that's 3 times in 6 years.

Nothing wrong with Angkor Wat, there is a reason it is a World Heritage.

However, the OP's post was (I think) more about how he managed to live in the boonies without a dime and just his Tuk-tuk friends.

Not sure that is an accomplishment to be put on one's CV.....

A year ago bkktrapper was almost making sense here - not that I agree with his conclusions, but the question was pertinent for those of us who come and go, for work or family reasons.
When you're not in Cambodia, what do you miss ?

I don't miss Angkor Wat because I haven't been there for years (but will visit again soon if all goes to plan). I surely don't miss Bor bor or Baw baw, which has memories of funeral breakfasts for me. I've never been to a rubbish dump to drink my cocktails either.

What I really really miss when I am not in Cambodia are the people. Not all of them, but most of them. I miss Cambodia because I laugh less often. Cambodia makes me happy, and it might be exaggerating to say that it makes me a better person, but I feel like I'm more the person that I'd like to be.
More :OD: and less

And you ? What do you miss when you're away ?

For me it's all about the drug I'm on. The KOWW drug [ Kingdom of Wonder Why drug ] I know it's bad for my health, my financial status and my wellbeing, but here I'm quite happy being on it and being addicted. . As soon as I'm off that drug and in another country I get withdrawal symptoms and cannot wait till I get my next ''fix, '' and that comes in as soon as go through Cambodian immigration and then sit in a tuk-tuk on a congested hi-way back to my place in PP .

Oh Buddha, I hate this place, but I hate every other place a lot more.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.
