Mercer (UK) Cost of Living Ranking

Post by cambo swa »

Mercer has published the cost of living for UK expats in all the 209 major cities of the world. It lists Phnom Penh at 109 of 209. Can that be true? Other cities within 5-/5+ on the list are Lisbon, Doha, HCM, Lima, Perth, Kiev, Hamburg, Kuwait City, and Aukland. Hard to believe that living in PP compares to the cost of those cities. At least not for me. Could I live in Aukland or Hamburg at the same cost as PP?

I do have a general link:

But, it requires a specific login each time to actually see the data. Maybe someone more IT intelligent than me can make that happen for all. Sorry.

Yes, as long as you don't grave Asian food there. That will be very expensive, just as Western food is incredibly expensive in Phnom Penh.

Its important to remember that the Mercer cost of living for expats calculates the cost of living for expat corporate executives and is actually a measure of the cost to the corporation. In Phnom Penh the cost of a top-of-the-line executive apartment or house is pretty expensive. Similarly the cost of expat food (as opposed to local food) is also pretty high. Cost for top-class schooling for children is high. Based on these and other criteria then the cost of living in Phnom Penh could indeed be on a par with Hamburg as hard as it may be to believe.
