highly doubt they have gone out of business. what distillery does that?

History[edit]
Mekhong was founded in 1941. It's name is derived from a dispute with the French concerning the border with Laos along the Mekong River. The company was reportedly purchased by Thai rum maker SangSom (แสงโสม) in 2010.

Composition[edit]
Despite being known as a whisky, Mekhong is in fact much closer to a rum. The distilled spirit is made from 95% sugar cane/molasses and 5% rice. The distilled spirit is then blended with a secret recipe of indigenous herbs and spices to produce its aroma and taste. Mekhong is distilled, blended, and bottled at the Bangyikhan Distillery on the outskirts of Bangkok. It contains 35% alcohol by volume, and it is used in a cocktail called the "Thai Sabai".[1]
In popular culture[edit]

Mekhong Whisky is mentioned several times on the album Hell's Ditch by The Pogues, along with other common Thai drinks. Mekhong (Mekong) is also the name of a popular song recorded by The Refreshments on the album Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy. In the song, the singer, at a bar in Bangkok, is recently arrived from Taipei. He repeatedly orders Mekhong for himself and a new friend (whose name he cannot remember), always allowing the bartender to keep the change.

Thai Sangsom has a noticeably heavier taste than Khmer Mekong which is, all and all, pretty light for whiskey and only 31%.

Frank, Thai Mekhong is an entirety different product. It is unrelated to Khmer Mekong.

I would too, I hate that stuff. I barely ever touch spirits anyway other than maybe one B52 every couple of months. Mekong wasn't that bad. The others like Alexand and Boroso seem well rough though, and I had the pleasure of trying some "Super Whiskey" a good few years ago, never since.

when you have a few years distilling at home under your belt you at least learn your own preferences.
the thai mekhong is a pretty ok drop.
it is not a difficult or mysterious task to make good spirits.
i have considered starting a little rhumerie here more than once.
perhaps when i retire to the province.

My Khmer gf called these guys at my behest and was told that Khmer Mekong will no longer be made and the brand rights have not been sold. Alas. I think it has good potential.

hehe the "super whisky" is bottled under the name of thai hout. it is 3500 R for a 750 ml bottle. like alexand, only 40 proof. they use flavoring essences for these product to make it taste like whisky. they do not put much in the super whisky
