My mate's a twat
Re: My mate's a twat
Its fairly easy to walk past Cambodian immigration without stamping out, depending on the crossing. Most border crossings have a walkaround for illegals, usually within a couple hundred meters of the legal crossing point, and at Poipet you can just tell the imigration cop you're going to the casino, which is on the other side of immigration, and walk right through into no-man's land without stamping out. They've never even asked to see my passport when I do that. Problem isn't leaving Cambodia, it's entering Thailand. The Thais won't stamp you in without seeing a Cambodian stamp out. And if you also walk around Thai immigration and enter illegally, now you are in Thailand without a visa or stamp in, making hotel, travel and leaving very difficult.OrangeDragon wrote:Are there still "facilitators" who can get you out or cambodia but legally into thailand... like slip you into the halfway point of the process at poipet/etc?
Hell, having gone through that border... seems like it would be pretty easy to slip yourself through. The cambodia side is just a shack off to one side... just walk past it near closing time when there's a surge of people off the last bus.

Re: My mate's a twat
I'm doubtful the lost passport story is his best route. Would require a fabricated story to the police about losing the passport, lying to the embassy and then surviving a grilling from immigration as to why there's no record of a visa in the last 4 years. Could backfire nastily and as I said already he's not the type to pull it off. I think honesty is his best option. Same goes for illegal border crossing etc. If it goes wrong, he's double fucked.General Mackevili wrote:If it was 4 years ago, the first thing I would try is losing my passport and hoping for the best.
He'll get an emergency one, and maybe after sweating him for a few hours, stamp him out.
He sounds fucked, and every day you enable him to stay longer, you've helped him become even more fucked.
Also, point taken from several posters regarding not helping the situation by enabling. In fairness though, a mate is a mate and he has only recently exhausted all other options. Also at this point, an extra month or 2 has not really made his situation any worse. He knows in no uncertain terms what he has to do and hopefully it wont involve too long a period at His Majesty's Leisure. But if it does, so be it. I'll report as and when his predicament is resolved or at least clearer.

There are different levels of friends.
Clearly this guy is not a good friend of yours, maybe an acquaintance.
But for me, I'd never rat on/throw my true friends out, I have about 5, rather die first.
Just a thought.

How much have you loaned him and why do you think he will ever pay any of it back? He doesn't sound like a good credit risk.

Re: My mate's a twat
Someone I know was in the very same position. In the end he just went to the immigration Dept and told them the truth . They asked how much money he had. He had borrowed $1000 to pay a corrupt Immigration officer at the airport, but the officer kept hiking the price. He told them he had $1000. They said they would be ejecting him from the country in 3 days time.He was to return to the office then. He bought the ticket and returned to immigration. they escorted him to the airport and stamped him in and out as if he had only been here one month. He had originally been told he wouldn't be able to return to Cambodia, but nothing was written in the passport he said. Hope this helps.DeathandTaxes wrote:Hi all. Wanting advice regarding a friend who is currently sleeping on my couch with 4 years+ overstay.
He hasnt worked in 6 months after his previous employer asked to see his visa and cant get another job without one. myself and other friends have helped as much as possible with loans etc but we have all reached our limit and im getting pressure from my partner to turf him out as he was only suppose to be staying a week and we're now into month 3.
Of course it will be very difficult to find other accommodation without a valid visa, even if he had money for rent. He claims to not have much family in the UK and says they could never find the $ required to pay the fine. He says he wants is to go back to Europe to work and clear his debts..
My question is, what are his options? I'm fairly sure his situation is not that unique. If i was sure he was able to use it, as a last helping hand i could possibly organize a whip round for a one way ticket to europe but thats about it. Im inclined to tell him to throw himself on the mercy of immigration but dont want to be having to support him in prison for the next few years. From my research, im doubtful the embassy would have much sympathy and rightly so.
Any insights, much appreciated
EDIT this was a very recent case from about 1.5 months ago. Also forgot to mention that his passport had expired. He got a new one before he went to the immigration in case it is of some relevance. They knew he had overstayed 4 years.

When I take a quick glance at the board I read the title of this post as "My mate's twat." Double take.
