Is masculinity evolving? (Matt Walsh)

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Is masculinity evolving? (Matt Walsh)

Post by StroppyChops »

One of the aspects of institutionalised Christianity that I hate and resist strongly is the notion that men are supposed to be "nice." Sit in the pew, sing some nice songs, be nice to other people, have a nice cup of tea, rinse and repeat in seven days. Maybe go to a nice home meeting mid-week. Radical feminism found it's way into the church very early, and it's now not uncommon to walk into churches that are little more than militant feminist movements with a religious flavour, where the only reasonably decent dude is Jesus, and He's my boyfriend. All other men should be silent eunuchs that had better open the door for me, but I'm not going to appreciate it.

Let me be clear that I'm not intentionally being misogynistic, I'm tired of western-world man-bashing.

Found this on DailyWire today and quite enjoyed it.

WALSH: The Definition Of Masculinity Isn't 'Evolving.' It's Being Deformed And Destroyed.
The menswear brand Bonobos today launched their #EvolveTheDefinition campaign, which, through Twitter activism and the sale of trendy blazers, hopes to change society's conception of masculinity. The company explained that the traditional definition of masculinity is "broken, outdated, and tired," and needs to be broadened and updated to fit our enlightened age. According to the Bonobos CEO, this isn't about the evolution of menswear — it's about the evolution of men. This is a theory of evolution that Darwin never covered in "The Origin of Species."

The video accompanying this campaign is exactly what you would expect. It features a collection of stylish and feminine dudes reading synonyms for masculine — "macho, manly ... strong, brawny, powerful" — and then reacting with horror and disapproval. "My goodness," exclaims one guy. "I think that definition is a little scary," whimpers a grown man in a beanie. The men then give their own definitions, which include things like "being able to smile and cry" and "being brave enough to be who I am."

Woman: You don't have to open the door for me just because I'm a woman?
Man: I'm not. I'm opening the door because I'm a gentleman.

Isn't it just a case that nowadays western girls just wanna be like guys (and in the process have lost their femininity) and the guys don't know where they stand anymore?? :hattip:

I'm regressing rather than evolving. Also 172 is not statistically significant. They could be at a Westlife concert.

Lol Stroppy. Try the Catholic church - no women, no evolution, and it's all good. :stir:

Seriously though, I think that there has been a big shift over recent years in the number of hours that fathers spend looking after their kids. Mothers are working more, so dads spend more time with their children. More equality in childcare is a good thing for everyone, isn't it ? Win-win ?

I agree completely.
I find this latest #MeToo ecstasy to be, on the one hand very welcome, flushing out the scumbags and cockroaches, but on the other, a huge power grab and a pretext to demonize and emasculate all men, decent or not, and even an attempt to redefine what is decent, to better suit women (don't even presume to ask me for a date, who do you think you are? Sexual harrassment!!).

The grand irony is that deep down (supported by actual studies, which I'm too lazy to post, because, I'm a guy, and I don't have to) most women actually want a man who fulfills the traditional male role. Relationships where the woman is the boss tend to be quite unhappy for both partners.
Women just want less grunt and a bit more respect. Or the moon on a stick, in some cases.

Yep, sure. Kids definitely need more dad time.

I saw that study, but also don't have the source - apparently even the militant feminists are still secretly attracted to masculine men!

Masculinity evolving into what, an oozing slime. The shift in male / female roles transformed in the 60s when feminism took hold, and women could just use the sperm from a donor and go to work, leading men to become more alcoholic.
