Living well, cheap

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Living well, cheap

Post by vladimir »

I thought a thread on eating well for little could benefit some posters

I hope it's not too offensive for the wannabe schmucksters desperately trying to prove they earn more money than the next guy

There are still places selling pork and rice plus iced coffee for $1, usually in Sen Sok and outer/poorer areas, like the meal, you need to find a place with great food and coffee.

In addition, you can buy smart.

Buy from markets, or send your Khmer friend/partner there alone. A white skin/obvious barang means a higher price

I buy sourdough bread from Superduper, 1 Kg flying saucer for $2.90, and the great thing about sourdough bread is it keeps for ages, no wastage due to mould etc. It's also way tastier and healthier, and makes deadly toast.

One & One on 271 sell 1.8 Kg blocks of standard grade Australian cheese (cheddar or cream cheese) for around $20, I buy one and split it with a friend, no way I can eat that much cheese

Cheapest wines? Angkor Minimart near Russian Market, Supercheap on 310, or contact James Dumar on facebook

Superstore near Limkokwing Uni sell great pies for around $0.75, and they have the lowest price in town for tinned Portugese sardines in olive oil, around $1.85

Hope this helps someone, please feel free to add/correct products/prices/outlets

The ultimate would be a plan of the city with restaurant/markets etc.
Jesus loves you...Mexico is great, right? ;)

I think this is a great idea for a thread, vlad. Yet, I'm sure there may be the usual naysayers.
Looking forward to juan potatoes input.

Might add something later. :)

I always thought a cheap way to eat was to have lots of friends , even enemys will do sometimes, just turn up to visit them around dinner time.
Hey, that smells good, I haven't eaten that stuff for a long time.

The pies in superstore are cheap, but shit. The japanese bakery inside the entrance is great for bread and stuff. Doesnt pork and rice cost the same in most places? I must admit i never ate in in the central areas because i always lived outside, and trips into the main area were brekfast treat times.

Everything else seems reasonable. How much should a pineapple cost etc?

Doesn't this depend on the size and the quality of the pineapple ? And also, the time of the year, where it comes from etc?
I wouldn't compare a little cheap shitty and acidic pineapple with a fresh juicy pineapple that makes you smile because it's so good. :D
A good pineapple is worth that extra 1000r IMO.

Titanic is my regular restaurant in SV. Food is cheap and good - lovely family run the place. They also serve very good fresh shrimps. Did you try their shrimp fried rice served in half a pineapple ? Wicked. And they do good breakfasts at any time.
Snooky offer beer or a glass of wine with their evening specials for $3, so good value place also.

Otherwise, in PP my go-to place for cigs and booze is Lucky Drink.
Last minute: Just seen your post FLB and taken note.
