Yeah, how about other countries located in different continents or islands, the post on Bulgaria was a good start.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

With meat? Pork or chicken? Not so sure I'd want to eat that, figuring the quality of the meat must be really low or serving amount almost non-existent.

Chicken.

I doubt some of U guys bother with local food or eating like locals do.

If you made the effort you'd know the difference. And we are on topic of living on $400 a month, so although tasty and nutritious, nothing fancy here.

However the OP is really scraping the barrel. To me. The bare minimum survivable option in Thailand or Cambodia should be like double what BITM QUOTED ie $800 a month or $26 a day

Yes, excellent report on Bulgaria from Pizzalover. Got me reading up on the country and its cities for an hour or two. Kyiv, Ukraine is another place that's interested me since someone I know spent a few years there. I visited Kyiv long ago, 1980s, and really liked its feel, even though it was under the USSR thumb. The eastern European countries are coming roses for a lot of tourists these days. The key word has been "cheap." But for me it's the amazing architecture, the old European feel, and beautiful streets with actual sidewalks, trees, trash bins and relaxing benches. It's something that I've been yearning for for a couple of years now. Both my parents are of 20th century Euro background.

PS Back on topic, I forgot to mention one site reported in 2017 that an expat "can easily" live on $500US a month in Bulgaria.

The first few years of visiting SEA and first couple of years of living here, I ate on the street. I started to feel not quite right. So I adjusted step by step to pretty much eating a wide variety of food with vegetables and salads at western eateries. I just don't like the quality of the street stuff nor the nutritional value, such as it is.

$500/ month let's 2 of us live quite well.
I smoke, I drink but I don't go "out". Solar power and own home. Doesn't seem to be a problem.

I spend about $200 each month on living expenses (food, beer, toiletries etc)....

I've been living in Naypyitaw (ghost capital city of Myanmar) for the past 2 years. If I rent a house, I'd pay about $200 a month for a modern, 2/3 bedroom house with garden. (Cheap rent because so many empty houses - everyone lives in Yangon).

But the local police/army don't allow me to rent a private house. So my school employer pays about $900 a month to put me up in a 4-star hotel :)

What are my outgoings:

Breakfast is included in the hotel price.
Lunch is a homemade salad/fruit/healthy food
I make a fish/salad for my evening meal
I buy toiletries in the small supermarket.
A little petrol for my motorbike - I don't ride it much

And that''s it!!!

Why don't I spend money on evening entertainment, hot whores etc, ten-pin bowling, live clubs etc etc?

'cos either they don't exist, or the police don't allow me to 'partake' or the locals are shit-scared of the police :)

All I've done for 2 years is ride my bicycle all over the city and go to the gym. I am now fitter and slimmer than a very fit, slim guy...

Anyway, I'm moving back to Thailand this month before I go mad with the lack of sex.

Nice, clean and very safe city though. If you are a lard-bucket and want to lose weight, get fit and be totally celibate, come and live in Naypyitaw.

....both children going to quality schools
What country? surely not international
MY daughters international school years 9-12 inn Thailand ran $12,000 /year ( 10 months)
Cambodia, oldest in International School (5 years old), youngest in Montessori but will move onto same schol as older sibling in a couple years so that will bump up the cost more. School fees increase as they move up in grades at the international school, but not as high as $12,000.
