Little gas stoves are dangerous

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Is it because they re-fill the containers and their subsequent re-use is dangerous?

These small cans are meant to be refilled - you swap your empties when you re-stock.
Problems; Cans get old and often rust out. Connections get damaged. Same story with the stove at home.
The large bottles sometimes go off too, same as back in the western world.

Make sure you are sold good new-ish cans, check your connections.
Have your instant response planned, and armed. The right extinguisher and a fire blanket.

They also need to be stored in a cool environment. A friend bought a can at the markets and it exploded on the way home. Don't buy them if they've been sitting in the sun!

The biggest problem is people put oversized cooking containers on top which spreads the flame out over the gas canister, which then heats up and explodes.

Concur with Duncan. That is the usual cause of these things exploding.

My wife was cooking a huge pot of something for a birthday party, it overheated and blew up.
Lesson not learned. She then put the pot onto our regular sized gas cooker which also blew up.

That being the usual cause of these things exploding but not always.
The little shop across the road sells these little gas canisters. One day, one of the canisters exploded and went right through the tin roof above it.

We use these small cookers in the workshop - although we have some hard rules in place.

We buy our own brand new quality cylinders, which are refilled as needed. If anyone is found to have brought in any other cylinder they already know they'll probably lose their job. We forgive any honest mistake and turn it into a learning exercise, but not this one.

We inspect the cylinders regularly and any that are showing wear and tear are emptied and punctured so they can't be re-used elsewhere.

There's not much else that strikes as much fear in me as seeing these cylinders battered and rusty, but sprayed over with "chrome" spray to hide the damage.

Yet another reason I hate cooking.
