Life in a Cambodian Garbage Dump (slideshow)
Life in a garbage dump
Not too far from the wonders of Angkor Wat, many impoverished Cambodians scramble for survival in a vast landfill where they collect waste items and eat the leftovers thrown away by others.
You will have to follow the link to check out the slideshow and the descriptions. Ok, here's the first one:
Absolute poverty
Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in the world. The average monthly income in the Southeast Asian country is less than 32 dollars. In this picture, Soburn collects fodder for pigs from the Anlong Pi landfill. The 11-year-old works in the morning and goes to school in the afternoon.

Isn't that the dump that draws a lot of Koran and Japanese photo tourist groups to "enjoy the misery"? A bit like having a guided tour on Manhattan, stopping to take pictures of outstandingly miserable groups of bums?

Re: Life in a Cambodian Garbage Dump (slideshow)
I saw a gorgeous woman begging the other day. She wasn't only naturally beautiful, but her hair and face were made up, but her clothes were ratty. I just didn't know what to make of it. Where'd she get the makeup? And why weren't there clothes to go with it? I was tempted to offer her $1 to pose with her sign for me, but I decided against it because I couldn't find a delicate way of putting my thoughts into words.

Didn't you think you were scammed? Once along the river side, a woman with sexy dress and begged me for 1000 riel to dedicate to whom died on Pich bridge, but I didn't give her even 100 riel because her dress looked smart and sexier than me. She wore high heel and looked richer than me. She cursed me in front of others that I look pretty, but I'm heartless! Many offended words then I was sure that I was right that not give her money :pMekongMouse wrote:I saw a gorgeous woman begging the other day. Well I wasn't going to give her the money to help her. It was so I could take the picture, so it wouldn't have been a scam if I got the picture. But I never gave any money. I prefer giving money to registered and vetted charities over random people on the street. You never know if you're feeding a drug addiction or helping them get back on their feet.

Haha, a lot of the time...
Re: Life in a Cambodian Garbage Dump (slideshow)
Lets just explore that.
$1 to a beggar on a street, might be feeding a drug habit or might be used for food. 100% goes to one or the other.
$1 given to an registered support organisation, how many cents actually goes to the intended beneficiaries ? Maybe 5 cents, maybe less
I recently spent a night sleeping rough, to raise awareness for homeless people in my 'Developed' country, it was not very nice.
I don't take drugs but if someone lives night after night under those same conditions, we should be able to understand their wish to escape (maybe through drugs)
I understand totally your take 'good make up but scraggy clothes' and you thoughts it was just a scam, I guess you might well be correct but, while your comments do not irk me, I am frustrated we can not do more but you are right it needs to be in the right way.
No easy solution but maybe a starting point
