Life-altering benefits enjoyed by expats in Asia

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Western culture diminishes men, mutates women with flawed empowerment and encourages gender confusion.

When I first landed in Asia, it seemed an exotic new world brimming with potential. After seven years of wandering, I learned that those assumptions were true. Living as an expat in Asia gives you more freedom than western cubicle life offers

Westerners who move to Asia will get to live on the fringes of their new culture. It’s a unique state of limbo. You live within a culture, but never as a part of it. Rather, you become a tolerated alien. This “expatriate trail” covers all of Asia. Along that trail, you can enjoy personal freedoms that don’t exist in your own culture.

Indirect communication: lack of directness preserves preserving harmony. This is more culturally important than getting the exact truth. Body language, eye contact, intonation, and silence are as important as words. Further, Asians often smile or giggle during conflicts. Usually, they’re trying to deflect, rather than mocking the situation.

Single expat women have a harder time in Asia. A big part of the expat experience for many women is to learn how to spend time alone.
Hong Kong psychologist Melanie Bryan works with many expat women in Hong Kong. She noted: “I see women drink more. I definitely see them depressed.

Western culture diminishes men, mutates women with flawed empowerment and encourages gender confusion. Consider gender roles in television comedies. Most have smart, witty, attractive women married to inept, overweight, immature men.

Immediately off the plane in Asia, you become immune to ads, because you won’t understand any of them! After around six months, the effects of western propaganda will start to wear off. Ad jingles will stop playing in your head. Your favorite TV shows will lose importance. You will decide what to eat on your own.

:tard: Wow. That's funny. This person obviously watches too much TV and judges western "culture" from TV shows. They seem to have missed the vastly superior Asian TV shows. Lol. %)
Maybe it's time to stop watching TV wherever you are living and connect with real life around you.

All I know for sure is my general standard of living is vastly better here than back home. In every conceivable way. The only way it's worse is I don't get to go to live sports events such as premier league football* and international cricket games.

* I am a Qpr fan so this hasnt happened for years anyway.

I'm not arguing at all- I'm just wanting to clarify. Your standard of living is better here in Cambodia than "back home?

Standard of living definition: An individual's or a socioeconomic class's standard of living is the level of wealth, comfort, material goods, and necessities available to them in a certain geographical area, usually a country.

You are more wealthy here than "back home"? (IDK where you're from). Do you have nicer/better quality food, clothes, more comfort of living, and a better vehicle here in Cambodia than your home?

Where are you from and what kind of work do you do here in Cambodia? I can see how most of your comfort levels could be better here if you are living off of retirement or a sum of money.
Still here, in country...

Yes nicer home, more comfort, better diet, healthier lifestyle and far superior girl friend in terms of looks, demeanor and intelligence.

Not bothered by clothes or vehicles but as it goes vehicles wise at home I didn't own anything at all and here I own 2 mopeds purchased brand new out the showroom. On a buy one get one free deal!

(Back home that deal is for cartons of milk not vehicles!)

Work wise I am a humble teacher of Cambridge A Level in an international school. I am not coinng it in but am able to support myself, wife and children out here living a comfortable 'middle class' lifestyle where I can afford to eat out at restaurants when I want, go to the movies, buy my family gifts and take a holiday abroad once a year. Plus private education for my kids Oh yeah and no mortgage, no debt and no loans to pay off!

The teaching position I have here I am not qualified for back home as whilst I do have a degree in the subject I teach I don't have a PGCE, etc, etc.

Plus there are various private reasons why my life is better but I won't go into them.

It's a no brainier for me anyway. I live in a large 3 bedroom detached house with 2 bathrooms, huge kitchen and large gated yard 15 minutes from the city center and 10 minutes from work.

Back home I would be in a studio apartment or tiny one bedroom place in a block of flats at least half an hour from work on public transport as I don't own a vehicle back home and about an hour from the city center. The neighborhood would also likely have high crime rate, visible homelessness, terrible restaurants etc etc.

Not saying it is a utopia out here. It isn't. But it is better than home. For me anyway. Very grateful to be here!

👍

I love Asia too, thats why I'm here, but FFS, this article is crappy:
Asian expat life for men vs women

Asian women are pretty, petite, and comfortable in a feminine role. For single Western men, Asia can be a paradise of women more than willing to pamper them. Most know how to cook and are happy to play the role of a traditional woman.

With money, old, retired white men have their choice of young women to look after them. In exchange, the young lady counts on money for the present and also her future.

Why? Sounds a very accurate description.

LOL. Because it's lazy and stereotyped, as well as being inaccurate. That's why. ;-)

Here's more from same article - western schools are :
In Western consumer culture, the driving goal is to build wealth. Schooling has become an industry instead of a service. Students are the commodity. Schools run for profit, generating college degrees that determine social standing.
And in Asia, of course this is not at all the case at all. The driving goal is not wealth, schooling is not an industry, degrees do not determine social standing, blah, blah.

Article also says that a lot of Americans have problems with mental illness and that a lot of people take drugs there - whereas in Asia... it's suggested that there is no mental illness, no violence, and no drug problems. The children are safe to frolic in the streets and old people are respected and looked after by the community.
Well, they should check out the CEO news forum.

There are many great things about Cambodia, but it's ridiculous to reduce it to a description of paradise full of rainbows and unicorns, peopled with subservient nubile handmaidens and cool enlightened Buddhist dudes. It's way better than that.

I watched series or movies anywhere i went, just because i like a story well-told. Maybe even more in asia because of cheap cd prices. I guess everybody does, especially at bed time, from time to time ?
And the longest-terms expats are often the working ones, they do socialize "in the real life" 8+ hours a day.
I had plenty of time for watching and socializing.
And as for ads, it's really good having them removed of the attention scan, especially on radio or in the shops.
