Lesser of two (or more) evils... Cambodian Universities?
So, the nephew has had his final exams and is poised to graduate near top of his class. Eager to move on to the university and start working on a medical degree. Only drawback is, while his English has improved nicely he still has poor comprehension in it when it comes to English language studies. This shuts him out of going to pretty much any good university in any other country (had Korea in mind, given his desire for medical school) and being able to perform well. So we're forced to look into Cambodian schools (at least for now). My question for you guys... do you know of any local universities that are teaching in Khmer but aren't complete shams? As in places where he can still get a decent training/education? His end goal is to practice in Cambodia, so the ability to carry the degree elsewhere and use it isn't as big of a deal... though would still be nice if somehow possible.
Sen Sok perhaps (I think the actual university name is International University)? I have zero clue and am appreciative of any advice on the matter.

Caring about your nephew's education makes me feel like you are such a really good and caring uncle. So i would like to share with you some of the medical schools in Cambodia i know. i also wanted to study medical, but my family couldn't afford it as at that time two of my siblings were studying at the university too. Including me it was three of us studying at the university. This was a really big burden for my family.
In Cambodia, there are some private and state universities provide medical subject.
Private school
1. Chenla University (http://www.clu.edu.kh/). It is quite popular and old compare to other private universities in the kingdom who provide medical subject. Normally people go there to study nurse and midwife. If you are planning for your nephew to study to become a doctor, Chenla University is not a right choice.
2. Norton University (http://norton-u.com/en/). It just launched it program in medical a few years ago. I don't really know about this university, but you can tell your nephew to go and talk with the school. It also only provide the program in nurse and midwife.
3. University of Puthisatra (http://www.puthisastra.edu.kh/) this is private university is quite popular and it has more colleges in medical compare to above two schools. I don't know who many colleges in medical they have. Again, please tell your nephew to go and talk to them. It is prime minister son's school.
4. International University (http://www.iu.edu.kh/) i think you know about this one. i don't have much inputs to put more. Note this school is a bit expensive compare to other.
State School
1. University of Health Science (http://uhs.edu.kh/internet/uhswebsite4/) this is one of the oldest medical school in Cambodia. It is also really expensive. Every year there were so many students flocked for entrance exam. Not to mention, its entrance exam is not really easy. Not so many students managed to get in there. However, i would suggest your nephew to try with this school. If he can get in, it would be so great. It is well-recognised throughout the country.
For English: i think almost every students from the province have problem with English, as you know in the province they don't have good teacher, moreover they don't have much time or opportunities to learn the language. I would suggest him to also study bachelor of art ( English literature) at the same time. He can either study on the weekend or in the evening. Many private universities provide partial and fully scholarship for many subjects including English. I got 80% off for my English class. So, i paid only 90 dollars per year. It was such a big relieve for my family. That's why i could study two different subjects at the same time. Please tell him to learn more about grammar if he wants to get scholarship.

Thanks for that info Samouth, I will pass it on to my wife. And he has been studying English on the side through high school since I moved him to Phnom Penh, but it's too late at the moment for him to catch up for being able to study in it well. He will also be getting English classes while he studies medicine for sure, and living with the wife and myself he learns a lot. I wish I could convince her to stop speaKing to him in Khmer at home, it would help a lot to force him to use English or at least try with English first.

And we got the price back for IU... not bad at all in western income terms.
For anyone curious:
6, 8, and 10 year medical degree programs (each being a higher level of degree, obviously) $2,000/year first 2 years and $2,500 for each year after. That's $14,000 for the 6 year degree which also includes some time studying with doctors in Thailand.

Re: Lesser of two (or more) evils... Cambodian Universities?
Samouth, my wife also suggested UHS because he could work in a government hospital... but Cambodian government hospitals are poor quality and doctors are poorly trained compared to Sen Sok doctors for example. If it's so hard of a school to enter, why does it make such bad doctors and why is it still to well recognized compared to other schools that are making better doctors? Isn't it likely that the doctors graduating from there are able to do so not because of skill, but because of corruption and bribes?
Re: Lesser of two (or more) evils... Cambodian Universities?
I want to make it clear. It is not guarantee that he will get a job in government hospital after he finish from UHS. He still has to do some more exams to compete with other alumni to get a job in the government hospital or he still has to find a job by himself. However, it is not always easy. Normally the post in any hospital in Phnom Penh is the hardest one to get ( i don't know about corruption, people might paid to get a job in any hospital in Phnom Penh). However, the good thing is that his certificate is a lot more credited compare to those from private schools. Most khmer professors at IU are from UHS. i guess they pay more attention with students at IU, because they are being paid well at IU. Most of students who study medical have relatives who work in the state hospitals or their parents own clinic. So when they graduate they either can work in the hospital or help with their parents clinic. Anyway, there are still chances for outstanding student to get in the state hospitals or privates hospitals.

OP,,OD, sorry to side-track the issue, but not worth starting a new thread,,,, Today I had this pamphlet put in my shopping bag at Bayon s/market. Are those Tuition fees for real,,$5,300 for 2 months ?

Samouth, the Zaman fees quoted are for the whole year.
You get a discount if you pay early, the amount changes if you pay later. Bad marketing/confusing advertising.
Zaman HS achieved less than 50% pass rate of for the Khmer national exams last year.
For the same exams, CIA achieved over 100% in 2010, I'm not sure about last year, but it was probably close.
CIA is both cheaper, and better, imho. BISPP is also cheaper, afaik, and cheaper.
Zaman is totally over-rated, imho.
