Leasing hotel in Siem Reap

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Even the guy with Singaporean, Chinese, and Muslim Malay connections is hiding out in his hotel to avoid creditors. The business is tough right now.

... but rumor has it the PRC has been eyeing it for eventual takeover...

The next Westlake with a temple view coming soon.

I do agree with all the advice not to do it. When I came to Siem Reap in 2012 there were rather less than 400 hotels. There are now in excess of 1200 hotels including the enormous Sokha Resort with over 600 rooms. Astonishingly there are still many hotels under construction. The number of tourists has not however tripled - if anything its gone down except for the massive growth in the number of Chinese tourists who go to their own prepaid hotels.

Think outside the box and look at locations that have a shortage of hotels and think about creating something unique to attract customers (if you have funds). Alternatively think about being a supplier to these hotels - you do not have to care then if they go bust.

I agree with the posts before. Don't do it. My feeling is, Siem Reap have too much of everything. I'm also looking for a small guesthouse since a while. Don't be in a hurry, don't trust agents. Stay at different places in Cambodia and try to get a feeling for the area. Get in contact with local expats there, to get more informations. Take your time. My advice.
Good luck!
