Kingdom of Wonder recommended for low costs for expat retirees

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Kingdom of Wonder recommended for low costs for expat retirees

So far so good, but how about letting us in to retire in the first place? My plan this year was to finish work forever in July, spend a couple of months on the beach in Ao Nang, then move to Siem Reap for the last downhill run. And what happened? Dont get me started. But its nice to know that it would be a good place to retire, even if I cant!

Yes, at least in Cambodia you don't have to worry about an overvalued currency like the Thai Baht being driven to ridiculously high levels by speculators.

Just wondering what were your reasons for choosing Siem Reap to retire to ?,

Ao Nang has a pretty bog-standard beach to be fair, a strange choice as a beach destination

I was in Siem Reap a few times on visa runs when I lived in Vietnam, I like the pace of the place and you can get a better type of accommodation for a reasonable price. I am not into wholesale mongering and spent enough time in cities like PP to put me off living there. Ao Nang? Went there once for few days, stayed in a bungalow not far from the beach, I like the scenery,ok not the best beach but I like being near the sea and after the virus is over it will be fairly quiet.
I have worked in hospitality for 35 years, totally sick of every day dealing with the public, just want a quiet place, a decent motorbike, a few beers, the odd bit of female company, and enjoy the downhill run to oblivion. But at the moment the world is conspiring against me.

someone send this guy a case of anchor and a bag of gniew or whatever those stinky little clam shell things are... just to tide him ove.
Seriously though, what is the top thing you would miss or are missing about Cambodia?
And I don’t want answers like

“The people because they are amazing” we know that!

my main thing about missing cambodia is..... people watching!,, with a beer... on riverside... trying to guess where the different people come from.

People? hah - same everywhere, good and bad, although the mix varies from place to place. What I miss - hot weather, relaxed laws, cheap beer, interesting countryside, easy access to Vietnam / Laos / Thailand, generally cheap living, oh yes and girls who pretend not to mind that I am 40 to 50 years older than them and who will entertain me for the price of a few UK pints, compared to the aging slappers back home who will barely look in my direction without a belly full of high priced Vodka and Coke....
