Re: This is some heavy shit between JM/K440 and KImedia
That is not at all the point I was making. I was making a clear point about how postings generally can be seen by others in a negative way. I made no reference to any specific article.giblet wrote:The idea that someone should not be able to do historical research and then publish that research because they are a "guest" in the country is preposterous.
I also snicker at the suggestion of some of the commenters on those sites who seem to feel that they, who have never lived in Cambodia or visited Phu Quoc/Koh Tral, have some sort of moral edge in discussing the topic. They certainly have a point in saying that they may be more emotionally invested than an expat, but to extrapolate that to mean that their historical research is somehow more accurate is not correct.
" I have lived in PP since 2004 and so I am a world class authority" is crap I hear all the time on forums. The Cabal that controlled 'another' forum, seemed to think this fact gave them a gold badge in all debate. It, however, just lead to them throwing teddy, after teddy in the corner, when their arguments were unpicked and lost. As for that matter do the posters to try to 'big up' their posts by throwing in a few big words, that if they actually understood the meaning of, serve only to undermine their arguments as it exposes their inherent weaknesses.
Published research ? There is a time and PLACE for that. I venture a forum (other) with a history of negativity to Khmer people, political system, culture etc... is not the place.

Unfortunately throwing out generalisations on a forum so you can later take the high ground of "I didn't mention anyone/post specifically, so you're/they're choosing to take offence" can come across as a bit twatty, Ed. Personally I'm surprised you'd do this. I had you picked as the sort that would disagree openly and honestly with someone. Just sayin'.

Well Mr Chops. I listen to what you are saying but I do not feel that a. I disagree with the article or b. that I am trying to adopt the moral high ground. I was in fact just making the simple comment that folk should be aware of the consequences of what they post.
Maybe I could add a little clarity. K440 and CEO are not bubbles. Lots of folk in the big wide world read it, including , I would guess members of the Khmer security/intelligence services. If therefore someone posts controversial things, it is likely to be read by people who may not agree and may have the power to bring actions into the real world.
If I have come across as trying to grab some sort of moral high ground, I apologise, not at all my intention. Just a cautionary post.
As for the comment about the banter between Christians and Atheists. I am and have posted here, a Pagan and as I am sure you will know, that means 'Each to their Own'
Generalisation? Well I think that was fair to say. I did not make any specific reference to any individual, who, in fact has indicated he just wants to move things on, so making a general comment about what we all post, seemed a fair way to achieve that.
'Twatty' mmmm, I will have to think about that one.
References to the Cabal on the other forum, I think that is fair to say also. There was a clear cabal there and if you were in it you were right and if you was not you were wrong. I think this is evolving now and for the better but I was referring to the past.
Taking Offence? that was referring, not to me but to the people who read it, in this case Khmer, who have obviously taken offence. It is a simple thing that 'offence is found in the ear not in the mouth' this is a fundamental of Conflict Resolution, an area, I have some professional experience.

Jeff's article was not published on a forum. It was published in The Diplomat - "an international current-affairs magazine for the Asia-Pacific region, dedicated to quality analysis and commentary on events occurring in Asia,  (reaching) an audience of commentators, policymakers and academics with its in-depth treatment of regional issues."EdinWigan wrote:The Published research ? Chill out, Ed. In case it was not clear, I was referencing the commenters posting on the two sites that have been shredding JM's published article about his historical research on Phu Quoc/Koh Tral. Isn't that what we were all talking about?!

People should be very careful what they post here. Just now we will be seen as the thinking man's forum.

I could not be more chilled. It was not but it is now.
My last post was more in reply to Mr Chops, who threw out a few things , worthy of a response.

Re: This is some heavy shit between JM/K440 and KImedia
And just for the record...
I was accused over on K440 for being behind some of those posts on the Cambodian blogs.
First of all, the article being discussed has nothing to do with K440 or KiR. Nothing at all.
Second of all, I've never been a fan of outing people, it's uncalled for and just plain rude, etc.
I haven't made any posts on that blog site, and I don't approve of any of the confrontational or shit stirring comments on there. Period.
So, while I guess I can see why KiR might be quick to point a finger at me (just based on the fact that we're not on the best terms ever), I really had nothing to do with them whatsoever and know nothing about who did.
I sincerely hope it all blows over, and I frown upon anyone trying to cause trouble on there for anyone else.
So, no hard feelings if he wants to blame me, but I can assure him and everyone else I've stayed completely out of it.
I also think it looks bad for everyone to be posting the hateful crap that's on there or to be trying to out anyone.

Re: This is some heavy shit between JM/K440 and KImedia
And I don't even think posts like these help either:
" To point out the obvious, JM wrote an article under his own name. NOT ONE of you pea brains criticizing him has had the balls to do the same."
No point in going on there and being confrontational.
The first sentence was fine, not the second.
