Khmers Seem Worried About This Stinky, Homeless Barang

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

OK. What kind of receipt are you looking for?

A normal donation receipt that I can use for income tax purposes.

Doubt he is 501c3 registered.

Let's just strike your name from the list of potential donors for now.

What's 501c3 ? I'm not an American. In Europe things run differently.

501c3 is for American nonprofits. Anyway, even according to EU court rulings it appears you only get tax deductions when donating to governmentally recognized charities. Our homeless gentleman is most likely not recognized as a nonprofit organization, neither are we nor will we ever be.

I don't think we can produce the receipt you are looking for.

Judgment of the Court of Justice in Case C-318/07,

"Consequently, the Court rules that the free movement of capital precludes legislation of a Member State by virtue of which, as regards gifts made to bodies recognised as having charitable status, the benefit of a deduction for tax purposes is allowed only in respect of gifts made to bodies established in that Member State, without any possibility for the taxpayer to show that a gift made to a body established in another Member State satisfies the requirements imposed by that legislation for the grant of such a benefit. "Dear tax man, I would like to declare my princely donation of USD 5.00 to a meth head washed up in Cambodia."

Yupp, I see how that would work.

Eeerm, yeah, that's what I have expected.

Nah well, that's the problem. You got to open a little NGO - shouldn't be that difficult - just call it "help for angry, starving foreign birds" or something like this. Point is, once you've got that title, donations will flow in, and the funny thing is (if done correctly) the donations are basically coming from foreign governments. Always remember: tax evasion is the equivalent to the waste of taxes.....do I have to say more ?

If you register an NGO and run it honorably we can promote it for you. At this stage I unfortunately don't think we can do more.

Honorably towards the needy...of course, that's guaranteed. Problem is that I'm not in Cambodia...you guys have to do it.

Please forgive my ignorance and aparent stupidity but all this time I've been under the impression that my embassy was there to help me.
