I have a mixed response to this.

"Left for dead"... well that's not sensationalism at all. /sarcasm

I feel for the returned refugees, they were given a tough deal by the US (yeah, hate me, but it's true) in not being given residency as child refugees, while the US virtue-signalled it's saviour status to the world. I feel for this guy that he has T2D, but genetics loads the gun but lifestyle (usually) fires the trigger.

And yet, as a T2D myself, I'm left wondering what it is that this guy needs so much funding for.

The medication for T2D is ridiculously cheap in KoW (I paid $7 for a full carton - two months supply - of Diabetmin last night) and apart from a blood glucose test kit (which he'd already be completely familiar with) which you can buy at an entry level for around $30 here plus strips, there is nothing much else needed except for lifestyle management (right food, exercise, sleep balance) - hospital? What for? He looks to be in good physical shape in the photo, so unless there's something not obvious or not being shared, this seems a little scammy to me.

No doubt a bleeding heart will be along to tell me why I'm wrong or to check my attitude, but I've already walked a mile in that brother's shoes, and then several more. I have compassion for him, but think there's a game afoot.

Edit: After posting, I thought perhaps the GoFundMe is taking advantage of how little the general population understands the difference between T1D and T2D - T1D is significantly more serious and requires a lot more effort/dollars to treat. T2D is completely manageable through medication and lifestyle, unless you let it go untreated and reach a tipping point, at which point the consequences are self-inflicted. From the photo alone, this guy is fit.

I hate to be that asshole, but I agree with StroppyChops. My oldest sister is Type 1 but my younger is Type 2 (I'm neither), and there's world of a difference. Type 1 I can understand because of the finger poke kits, insulin pumps, needles, all that jazz, but Type 2? And with the healthy food here I'd think it rather hard to screw yourself up in terms of blood sugar levels.

The only time my Type 2 sister has been in the hospital is because she was on a fast food burgers and milkshake binge for several months straight which sent her into renal failure.

His former government didn’t do this to him..he did it to himself by committing a crime that put him in jail. If you speak the language and know the law then why not become a citizen of the said country? There are plenty of people who are from war torn countries that have a second chance in another country, some become citizens and good citizens.

I get that he is from Cambodia and the whole killing fields and then live in a bad area where gangs and crime happens but that is no excuse for him to ever want to become a better in life.

Now that he is “left for dead” with no family or “ lack of medical care” sounds a little far fetched. Some will say I sound like an asshole but then he should of thought about not being a menace to society.

I've never heard of T1D or T2Ds not being able to eat rice. Maybe he just doesn't like it, so he's, you know, a vegetarian celiac atheist who does, like, yoga and stuff.

Polished rice packs a lot more calories than the brown rice and can yo-yo the blood sugar levels more, especially the Khmer way of eating multiple bowls.
