Khmer New Year prices - did you pay more ?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Khmer New Year prices - did you pay more ?

Post by Anchor Moy »

If you didn't stock up for Khmer New Year, or you were traveling inside Cambodia, did you feel that prices went up - not at all, a little or a lot?

I was expecting worse I think. The beer by the can was 200r extra and the transport by minivan was 5000r more than usual two days before the NY. On the 13th, the tuktuk was 2000-4000 more for a half hour trip, but I was ok with paying a bit more, just like elsewhere for Xmas day or New Year. Hotel price was the same as usual. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised. :)

I paid an extra 5000r to send a large (50kg of smack) package by taxi to pp than usual. I didn't haggle.

Paid an extra 500r for my regular beer cooler ice block yesterday with an apology from the shop lady as there had been no ice left in the village so the cost of what she had bought was up 25%.

Everything else was normally priced, and the local bike guy patched a few inner tubes for free.

I heard a guy complaining about tuk tuk prices being an extra dollor or two since there was no competition. Just opportunists really.

I'm with AM on this one. If they've got to work in the holidays they should get a bit more. It's the everyday ad ons for everyday goods that gets me riled, and over the year costs thousands. Angkor Wat and buses I hardly ever use. There are rather a lot of holidays here though.

GA reckons that his village doesn't even charge extra.

I don't go to the shops until the only shop I do go to opens again. If I can help it. So far so good.

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.
