This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. I find that most locals are similar in public temperament to the ones in Mexico and Russia, namely, people will openly speak their minds (especially at traditional psar markets) for better or for worse, and rarely is it secret: The good news is if someone hates you for your race, your interracial dating, etc. then those people will quickly reveal themselves; likewise, the ones that genuinely wish you well, call your girlfriend "pretty" etc. have no pressure for false niceties so you know it's genuine if you receive such a compliment.

I find it much more refreshing that the false pleasantries and fake niceties one finds in the West (Cambodians smile at everything, but one quickly learns to discern at a young age all these different smiles and whether one is angry, confused, genuine, etc.)

Random Dude wrote: Sat Mar 23, 2024 10:05 am That's the case everywhere from what I've seen. Locals judge foreigners and each other, foreigners judge foreigners, foreigners judge locals.

In most Western countries (depending on the country) a certain percentage of the locals look at foreigners and probably decide they're either rich Asians living in luxury, potential terrorists/ people from a barbaric culture, refugees looking for a handout. border jumpers looking for a handout/ taking our jobs, migrant workers taking our jobs, skilled professionals taking our jobs, mail order brides, thieves, rapists, drug dealers and gangsters. Some may acknowledge that the foreign guy he works with is an ok dude, but it general they look at anyone foreign with distrust and according to what they 'think' they know about that country.

You even see it here on this forum. I've seen plenty of disparaging and judgemental comments about backpackers, dreadlocked hippies, TEFLers, YouTubers, retired drunks, sexpats, those who enjoy smoking weed, those who are struggling to get by on a limited income .... pretty much anyone living a slightly different lifestyle to whatever poster made the comment.
Reminds me that the only difference between an expat and an immigrant is income: If they make more money at a local job than locals, they're an expat; if they make less or the same amount, they are immigrants.

Yes, it is a great quote. Pity the OP didn't point in the right direction. Then again, the OP is not well educated or open-minded. I sense a certain Dunning-Kruger Effect at play. Oh well.
That Asimov meme omits the previous line
There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge''.

But it certainly isn't confined to the US nowadays.

Richard Dawkins' comment that he didn't believe he should have the right to vote on Brexit as he didn't have the necessary expertise comes to mind. Asimov's concern about the growing mindset “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge'' was surely prophetic.

I don't want to derail this thread, but I disagree with the implied elitism there. An individual doesn't need an advanced degree in sociology to hold a political opinion.

In all fairness, good ideas can come from anywhere. That doesn't mean they necessary will, but they can.

A wise leader seeks such "outsider" counsel (within reason), as a valuable counterbalance to sycophancy and corruption.

Whole lotta people-judging going down yesterday, with Finland rated the Happiest Country in the World, for the 7th consecutive year. It's Scandinavian neighbours predictably came in next best, with Switz and Israel (stats over 3 years and they avoided some atrosities. They won't be so lucky next year) in their usual top-10 pozis too.
Scandinavian countries seem to have pretty high rates of depression for such a happy bunch of people.

These happiness rankings seem to reflect people’s satisfaction with their government, more than anything to do with how much they enjoy their lives.

Why only a scale of 1 to 5 though? Why not a scale of 1 to 10? Seems that would be a better fit and be more logical.

I think Dawkin's point was that he did have a right to his political opinion, just not a right to have a vote on an issue with such likely wide-ranging economic consequences. He wasn't blaming the voters, but the politicians who choose which issues the general public can have a direct say on, as dictated by their own agendas.

The root of the problem is that the view that everyone is entitled to their own opinion is often confused with the idea that everyone's opinion is of equal worth.

Asimov does come off as being extremely elitist in his article, but I still find some truth in what he wrote.
To be sure, the average American can sign his name more or less legibly, and can make out the sports headlines - but how many nonelitist Americans can, without undue difficulty, read as many as a thousand consecutive words of small print, many of which may be trisyllabic ?
God knows what he would have made of social media.

I use a 5-point Likert scale in much of my research. Cleaner and easier to interpret.
