Re: Kep?
They've fished out all the crab, no crab when we were there last year, have heard the same problems from other people in the last year or so. If you want a beach with nowhere to drink other than cans you brought yourself then it's great. I think there might be a cash machine there now. There is no town and minimal shops of any sort. Lots of empty French villas. Some pokey, overpriced restaurants overhanging the water by the crab market, although they have bashed a three lane highway through there, so traffic's not a problem.
Re: Kep?
I wouldn't bother - we went down last year...did the crab market, walked along the beach...GF took a few selfies, then we hit the road back to PP. We didn't find anything of interest...unless you like quiet beaches. There doesn't seem to be any focal point or town centre that tourist infrastructure could build around.

Re: Kep?
Ah cheers guys, might be worth checking if I want to get some calm then
Slow down little world, you're changing too fast.
Re: Kep?
Quiet beaches? Sounds like a terrible place. Along with minimal trash, back-slackers, beggars, whores (whore-mongers), and traffic. Who would want to spend a few days or weeks in a place like that? Rather be on St. 136 or 51.

Re: Kep?
I love it there and prefer it to everywhere else (helps we have place to stay an family) plenty of crabs, plenty of seafood restaurants, over 150 bungalow operations,( some really nice ones) Gh's and hotels to stay, nice small man made beach, Rabbit island is great ( NOT on weekends)
there are 3 or 4 atms near the beach and 1 near the pier, small local market (need go 30 minutes to Kampot for real shopping).
LOTS of abandoned villas and LOTS of empty land. Just bring ur own entertainment and kick back
only a few tourist style restaurants near the beach, NO BARS/GIRLS, Traffic sucks on weekends from crab market to the beach along the beach, Monkeys hanging around for food, frienldy locals, great hikes thru the hills, great for cycling, only 2 1/2 hours to PP

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST
Re: Kep?
Had a trip a few weeks ago, good place, very good seafood, nice and relaxing. Did the same as Jamie stayed in Kampot, its only 30 minutes ride on a moto.

Re: Kep?
Whether or not you like Kep depends on what you're looking for. I spent three weeks in Kep last February. Quiet place (even in high season) except on weekends when (it seems) every Khmer family in the country descend on the one beach and camp in the gazebos/salas.
LOTS around to explore IF you have a moto. Avoid paying the entrance fee for the National Park trail 'loop' by entering from the back side by Wat Samathi (I've seen a thousand Buddhist temples... this one is worth a visit) and drive your airblade like a dirt bike (try not scare the shit out of all the hikers who have paid money to get hot & sweaty). Some nice views of the coast and salt flats all the way to Vietnam.
Amazing roads - either, 8-lane, properly engineered freeways that start & stop at what I assume are municipal boundaries, or potholed dirt tracks. The ruins of all the early '60s villas built before the Khmer Rouge regime are interesting for their architecture. Now, all bought 'on spec.' by rich Cambodian families/generals who, I'm pretty sure, will soon sell to the Chinese to develop 38-story condo/casino complexes... there goes the neighbourhood. .
They've punched a 16-lane superhighway (so far all gravel) almost to the border (it ends in the middle of nowhere at Angkol Beach).
The Crab Market is a tourist trap... but nice sunsets visible given the right atmospheric conditions.
Accommodation available for all budgets from $4/night dorm rooms to rediculously overpriced 'luxury resorts'.
The police collect their 'tea money' from the idiot barangs not wearing their tourist brain buckets, and who are either too drunk or stoned to see the 'Do Not Enter' signs on the one way streets.
I found Nacho Cheese Doritos and Lays Salt & Vinegar potato chips... those alone make it worth a visit.

Re: Kep?
I love Kep, spent a lot of time there a few years ago.
Great place to rent a bike, do some hiking and exploring, and relax.
Lots of decent restaurant options also.
To each is own, I think Kep is a small paradise.
