Kampot Doesn't Suck

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

competition for the cheap Barang tourists is immense. Looking at their FB page, seems every day a new businesses is opening or an old one for sale. PLUS offering cut throat prices on food an drinks.
Still talking nonsense about stuff you don't know anything about. How often are you in Cambodia again?

really? Nonsense? am there 2, 3x/ year (more than enough to know whats going on in kep and Kampot especially :-)

and ur an expert? :please: :please:

Kampot town just away from the riverside is busy always now
And the Kep road always has traffic... never used to
Victory hill and otres suck.. what a surprise.. glad you never found the good bits in SHV.. keep them to ourselves and we sit and watch the sunset munching on Leys crisps available all over the place ( apparently Not in VH or Otres.)
Otres roads and mostly sealed now ... part of the reason the country side had been spoiled - the seal roads brought 'resorts' etc...

Most have to be open 7 days a week. Business rents are so expensive. Hell I have seen compatible prices in the west.

Everytime i have gone to Kampot I have enjoyed myself,so much more relaxing then PP.
Lots of good places to eat and have a cool beer.

I went to a bar just off the river, think it was called couch potatoe run by a friendly pommie.

Had it setup with a huge screen and chairs like in a picture theater...had a great night watching AFL.

That's bad enough, the place is FULL of Aussies!!!!

I didn't find food cheap there, and evening entertainment is pretty much non existent.

It's boring, and OK for a few days. Everything in Snookie is far better.

Snookie's got beach, got space to drive, got variety, got party, got cheap.

Kampot is for old retired men preparing for the grave.....

Your lense from Phuket is a bit dirty. Might want to clean it a bit. I lived in Kampot back in 2009 and still go there often (have been there 5 times in the last 7 weeks), so while not claiming to be an expert, I most certainly do think my observations are better than yours. Plenty of business owners do quite well for themselves, and not everyone caters to the backpackers. Well enough to save/invest elsewhere. Just as with anywhere else, it mostly depends on the business type and the owner...

Anyways, if you'd been there at all over the past few years you'd know that place has become all about the hipsters now, not backpackers. Waaaay too many hipsters there, have to be careful who you associate with lest you become infected yourself. It's actually quite scary. I tend to avoid all the local expats just to be safe.

Yep, PhuketRichard appears to be incorrect on the 'cut throat' prices on food and drink. I found Kampot to be lacking in cheap food, although it did have some 50 cent beers. However you can get 50 cent beers easily in Snookie, and even Phnom Penh. The food in Kampot was actually quite pricey, though i did find a happypizza place on the riverside that did a curry for almost as cheap as in Snookie, although it was no way near as good.

Yep, them Barangs in Kampot are selling expensive, to make a profit, and considering the amount of passing travellers and freaks, they are doing pretty well, despite Kampot itself being a classic tourist trap complete with rude tuktuk drivers, and lacking in any nightlife or entertainment worth staying awake for..... :|

In Dreary Kampot now. Only place i have ever paid way more for average food in a khmer restaurant than good food in a barang one.

Trying to find bars open after midnight is like finding a needle in a haystack.

Gives me a greater appreciation of SHV even with the recent changes.
