Kampong Cham is starting to dissapear
Just came back from brekkie in KC from the tourist zone along the riverfront area. Several portions of the walk along the river were blocked off by police tape where the bank had collapsed into the river. The river is not high here nor does the water appear to be flowing rapidly. It had happened once already along the same stretch where a brand new restaurant on the bank collapsed and slid into the river. What I suspect is that the intense sand dredging that has been going on locally over the last few years has increased the depth and currents beneath the surface of the water have increased. Be careful buying shore front property here.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

Don't worry. I think the Chinese are building a dam upstream. That should help slow things down.

I'm waiting for that big ugly hotel on Chroy Changvar to fall in too. The amount of dredging that goes on nearby makes me wonder if it is inevitable. Those two inseparable allies - greed and stupidity seem to be able make anything happen.
Any soil engineer types around that can comment?

Actually, a huge part of Kampong Cham has disappeared already, but not by chronic erosion, but by an evil politico called GerryMander. EVERYTHING east of the Mekong River in the former Kampong Cham Province to the Vietnamese border is now a new province called Tbong Khmum. So, what's a little dirt along the river?

Cannabis used to grow right up to the riverbank, consolidating the soil and preventing erosion.

Poppies would probably consolidate the soil and prevent erosion as an alternative. I know they sell a lot of them for ANZAC day.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.

I heard this stuff is the best protection against erosion, but like always Cambodians got no fuckin' clue.
Und der Haifisch der hat Tränen
Und die laufen vom Gesicht
Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht
In der Tiefe ist es einsam
Und so manche Träne fliesst
Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist

I built a house in kompong cham. Hope the whole town sinks or burns or falls prey to some kind of disaster.
