Re: Job offer in Phnom Penh, Cambodia
fuck that, just take the job and gosigmoid wrote: ↑Thu May 23, 2019 5:41 pmWell, Cambodia is still way behind these countries in every way. I think it is still on the UN's 'Least Developed Countries' list.I have been to Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia before
I think it would be safe to refer to it as a 'basketcase'.
Not saying don't go, but keep your expectations very very low. If possible spend some time there before you decide or at least check out some videos on youtube or something.
if you really cant handle it, quit
you wont be any worse off
sometimes you just take the leap
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

It is not a very big salary. Keep in mind employers are often not trustworthy, with late payments and broken promises being common in KOW

Master's degree from Georgia Tech - I assume in engineering.
Can do much much better than 1800 a month in PP Cambodia. You don't mention if the firm is Khmer or a foreign construction firm. I assume a local firm. I've seen far too many projects that simply end due to a lack of money. Which means you'll likely be out several months pay.
1800 a month will get you a decent apartment and you can live a "normal" life, but you won't be saving anything and keep in mind that when you look for the next job - you'll be asked what your making now. Less than 24K isn't the neighborhood your looking to live in if you went to GT for a graduate degree.
Keep looking.

Perhaps the poster was speaking from his own personal experience and living in PP for two years has brought him enormous pride and self-satisfaction. I met a guy once who was proud that he banged a girl when he was in the eighth grade, it seemed trivial to me but 40 years later he was still proud of his accomplishment.

on the other hand.... Adventures and memories are priceless so if you want to do it, do it.
I would first ask for a higher salary though. 1800 USD might seem a lot at first sight but Phnom Penh is no longer the bargain people rave(d) about on the webz.

There's $100 rooms here in Phnom Penh Thmey. Not sure about staying here long term but if you want to live cheap its possible and it's not terribly far away from anywhere. Unless it's rush hour and then you've fuck all chance of going ten yards in a hurry wherever you are. Supermarket just down the end of the street. BKK1 will just eat all your money, remember you need to pony up a deposit you're unlikely to see back, so that's a grand gone before you even have anywhere to live.
