Introduce Yourself

This is a part of our Cambodia forums to chat about anything Cambodia-related. This discussion forum is at the top of our site because it's usually the busiest part of the expat community chatter with random topics on just about everything, including expat life, Khmer politics, Cambodian blogs we have or have come across, or whatever else our members want to discuss. Whether you're an expatriate, tourist, Cambodian or random traveler just passing through South East Asia, you are welcome to talk about anything or start new topics yourselves.

Hi I’m a 35 year old guy from the US. I decided to come teach ESL, and to volunteer with de-mining in rural provinces of Cambodia. I have no idea what in the hell I got myself into.

I’ve learned a good deal from this forum and from expats in general, and I am looking forward to offering what help I can on here as well. My inquisitive-idiosyncratic personality won’t change, and I enjoy learning every nuance of my topic; which is something the expat community has accommodated generously lol.

I’m looking forward to meeting cool, down to earth, tolerable people through CEO; as I am seeking respite from the rat race of the US (yes there could be a pun there).

Catch you on the flip side

Greetings,

I'm 57, nearing retirement and scouting out some places I like to retire to. Wont qualify for my pension till I'm 63 but seriously considering getting my TEFL and teach ESL until my pension kicks in. I've read I don't even need the TEFL since I have a couple of degrees but still worth the effort if you've never taught in a classroom.

I do have questions about banking in Cambodia. What forum would be best to ask those questions. Specifically how to setup a monthly transfer from some U.S investments accounts to a local Cambodian bank? Playing with an excel spreadsheet for putting together a budget. Do all the postings for housing display in USD or KHR?

Regards,

Answers:
A TEFL is almost a dealbreaker honestly, if you are going to teach as a volunteer, that would be the exception, as they are much more liberal with job placement as a general rule. For private schools a TEFL is almost seen as the equivalent (not a rule) of a teacher’s certificate, like what is required here in the US to teach anything, and a TEFL from the right place of course, will prepare you for classroom administration.

Banking through Canadia and other Cambodian banks, can fetch you a crazy interest rate, something like 8% in most cases. There is always the online banking option, and honestly you should have your national bank handle most of your money, interest or not. Capital One 360 is a great option, as there are no international fees, but I’m not sure if it’s available for non-US citizens, it very well may be, but I don’t know for sure, in case that applies to you.
Using Zelle to transfer money around is a great option for managing multiple accounts, at least it has been for me.

USD will be the currency you get paid with as well as what rent, etc will be paid with. Khmer24, Real Estate.KH etc, post in USD for rental prices.

I hope this helps.
