Introduce Yourself

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Well, that would definitely make more sense, lol.

Hi,
I am a veteran expat who has lived in Asia for more than 20 years. Down through the years I visited Cambodia several times and thought Phnom Penh could be a good place to settle next.
But I see that things have changed quite a bit over the last five or so years. Is Phnom Penh still viable?
I have an outside income of about $1,500 a month. Would that be sufficient for a good quality of life?
Thanks.

We welcome you to CEO! $1500 should be enough for almost 3 expats, according to some. You might find this of interest to you: general-chatter/living-sea-400usd-month-t23687.html

Hi all. I'm retired so came to asia from Oz 3 years ago. Nearly a year ago I arrived in Cambodia and happily settled here in a quiet town away from major tourism. Trying to learn the language, riding around by bicycle and stopping in coffee shops for a chat keeps me happy. A simple life is all I need.

Re: Introduce Yourself

Hello CEO members. I am planning to move move to Cambodia in January 2019 so there is just a few months to go and I am trying to plan things out. Phnom Penh is my city of choice for the time being. It has always been my dream to travel the world and see all that I can see while working abroad, learning different cultures and languages, and enjoying life from a different perspective than what I have been used to growing up here in the USA. I am mainly interested in traveling and working in Asia. I am a self taught linguist. I am a Native English speaker and I speak Japanese and Spanish fluently. I am currently studying and learning Khmer so that I can be ready to embrace the Cambodian people and culture as my own. I do not have a degree of any kind nor TEFL certified but I do have experience in teaching and interpretation for many years so I hope to find a job in Phnom Penh that would suit me. I enjoy meeting people and learning new things so feel free to introduce yourself to me and maybe we can become friends during my stay in Phnom Penh.

I am trying to find all the info I need ahead of time so that I can prepare for arrival in this foreign land. I have read up on keeping my belongings safe especially closer towards Cambodian New Year where many opportunistic thefts happen. And I have read up on how to better keep myself safe ( pretty common sense stuff that from what I'm seeing on these forums people just don't adhere to). If anyone has any advice for me before arrival I would absolutely love to hear it.

I am looking for a place to rent on a month to month or year lease which is how long I plan to be there. I have joined the Phnom Penh housing and shared housing groups on facebook to better aide me in my search however if anyone knows of any places currently renting I would really appreciate the help if you could inform me of these places. I am looking for a 1 bdr apartment Khmer style, western style, or mixed that is in a relatively quiet area at night meaning not close to traffic that would keep me awake all night long and yet close enough to the night life so I can relax a bit on the weekends. my budget is between $150-$400 a month for rent. If you know of any such places hmu because I would love to hear from you.

As for the Visa process, I have read that upon arrival I can apply for an E business visa for about $35 (without proof or a letter from a company showing that I intend to work) and then go to any travel agency and extend it to a year long visa for about $280. Is this still true as of 2018? I ask because I do not currently have anything set up with any employers as I plan to do my job hunt on foot so to speak once I land in Phnom Penh. If anyone knows of any good jobs or employers looking for Native English speakers in Phnom Penh I would appreciate a helpful point in the right direction. Thank you very much for your reply in advance.

Also what are the dangerous areas for xpats to go? Like straight up JUST DON'T go there PERIOD no matter what type of places? Even all the common sense in the world wouldn't keep me safe if I happen to turn the corner on a street I just shouldn't have and walked right into the jaws of Cerberus itself. I have been reading a lot of stories about Siem Reap. Though Siem Reap and the Temples of Angkor themselves through pictures look beautiful and incredible places to visit, Siem Reap sounds like a dangerous place for xpats especially at night. Just a lot of shit happens there lol. So can anyone enlighten me with some information?

Also just a heads up for anyone reading this I would like access to this new "Dark Forum" you guys have created so I will be posting the required 20 posts here pretty soon. The "Dark Forum" will help keep me informed of the really gruesome stuff going on in Cambodia that I would most definitely like to be aware of. I read a post the other day on CEO about a guy who went drinking at a bar and woke up the next day dazed and missing his pecker. I mean WTF??? lol This kind of stuff is stuff that I 100% want access to so I know what I'm stepping into for the long haul. Places to avoid so that I can stay away from that exact situation myself, and of course common sense stuff like "Hey! don't go getting messed up at a bar and expect to make it home safely walking back at night or watch your drink because you could get drugged quicker than a pistol shrimp can KO/Kill it's prey with 8,000 degree Fahrenheit bubble bullets.

20 quick posts won't cut it. Posts need quality over quantity.

You are absolutely right. My apologies if I made it sound like I was just going to face roll the keyboard about 20x and then call it a done deal. Quality over Quantity does indeed matter. Allow me to clarify what I said earlier. I am planning to become an active member of this forum. I will be moving to Phnom Penh, Cambodia in January of 2019 and it would greatly benefit me to be a member of CEO to keep in contact with the expats currently living there and learn all I can before arriving in a foreign place. My posts will be genuine. My posts will have substance. And my posts will have that quality that you and i'm sure many others are looking for. As I am currently not living there in Phnom Penh I will be unable to provide any news based posts so most of my posts from now until January will be just me asking questions preparing for my journey or me commenting on posts from others who post news related topics on CEO. I thank you very much for taking an interest in my introductory posts long enough to post a reply as It was quite a bit to read through to get to that end bit about making 20 posts to get into the Dark Forums. That is indeed still my goal and I look forward to eventually seeing you there. Have a wonderful day :)
