and it still won't be done right, because the houses here aren't grounded.... lol.

I've heard this. How does that work?

I live on a top floor with a very big open area and the lightning gets freaking close sometimes, once even zinging off the railings. There are two little metal spires on the top, which I have always hoped might be lightning conductors or something, but they probably aren't. Would it make any difference if they were?

if they're grounded lightning rods it could help. depends on how big the bolt is and how big their wire is. wouldn't help with day to day voltage spikes/etc the power here has. my USB cables zap me sometimes just from ground overbleed from my computer.

as for a separate circuit, why? the only time they really draw much power is if you're using the pump feature, which most don't and some don't even have.

That's a bit like saying "why fix that big pothole in the road? I haven't seen anybody die because of it yet." The potential problem is there and real, so why ignore it?

The separate circuit is so when the heater trips the breaker, you are not standing there naked, wet and in the dark. Plus, heaters alone use a lot of current. If you want to trust the undersized, Chinese made conductors installed for the single light fixture to carry the water heater's neutral back to the panel and trip the breaker before the wires overheat and catch fire, then please...carry on.

My advice to giblet remains...get an experienced electrician who knows the proper wire guage to use and get it done right.

Had a guy (friend of a Khmer friend) in to fix a wiring issue in the bathroom of the new apartment the other day. He'd forgotten his pluggers and asked to borrow a pair, said he couldn't proceed without protecting himself. I was duly impressed until I saw him testing for current by tapping live wires with his finger.
