When crossing roads ...... walk don't run. They will avoid you
When on motto or walking don;t use your phone.
If you don't need a smart phone when you are out just buy a cheap $10 phone. They will not steal these.
Don't carry more money than you need/can afford to lose. I don't use a wallet just have money in many pockets.
Smile and say hello to everyone........... carnt hurt.
Know wher you are going before you leave. That way the tuk tuk can be directed if needs be.
When they say "I Know, I know" ...........don't believe them

Just enjoy. It;s a nice place with nice people.

Lots of good info on here squeezed among the bullshit and fun bits. You will soon pick up who is up who and who not to listen to. Many people on here have been here a fair while and will give good advice if required.

It's nice to see some positivity on here. I was like you when I arrived a couple of years ago. Actually not a lot has changed. I still love it here.

The only piece of advice I'll give you refers to the traffic - whether you're walking, on a bicycle, on a moto or even driving a car - just one rule. Never EVER assume they've seen you.

The rest you'll figure out yourself. That's half the fun.

Sorry but that's just not true in Cambodia.
In Vietnam, you can walk calmly across a river of motos, and they will part around you.
In Cambodia, walk across an empty road, and the single oncoming moto will still find a way to cut you off, and squeeze into the gap in front of you - if you're lucky.

Not true anymore in VN either, at least in the cities. For one you got the freshieboys barreling down the road at 80 klicks; they have no control over the bike whatsoever. Secondly; SUV's, buses, and trucks find it a little hard to swerve. Plenty of people get clobbered.

I had some clown today cross from his lane into mine, when the obvious thing to do would have been to carry on in a straight line.

Oh, Look! A chance to have an accident! Let's drive TOWARDS the vehicle going in the opposite direction, not away from it.

The mind boggles.

Walk slowly across the road whilst simultaneously giving traffic the eye so they are aware of you....also be prepared to react according to any changes. There are no fixed rules.
